The sequel to the 1982 film Tron, which has had undergone a number of name changes since it was first announced, at last has an official title – Tron Legacy.

The title was announced as part of the Disney panel at the San Diego Comic-Con where fans were treated to cast and crew appearances that included stars Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hudlund, Olivia Wilde and director Joseph Kosinksi.

Although it was too early in the production process for a trailer to be shown, the panel unveiled the official synopsis for the film together with a number of never before seen concept artist images.

Official synopsis:

TRON [LEGACY] is a 3D high-tech adventure set in a digital world that’s unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (GARRETT HEDLUND), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (JEFF BRIDGES), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant (OLIVIA WILDE), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

Attendees were also shown a rough cut of an early scene starring Garrett Hedlund as Sam Flynn.  In the scene Flynn ventures into an old abandoned arcade from the first Tron movie on the suggestion of the original Tron character Alan Bradley (I’m told this occurred via a voiceover from Bruce Boxleitner).

Director Joseph Kosinksi also confirmed that the new movie won’t be set on the internet, which is a great decision.  Instead it will take place in a version of the original Tron universe that has been evolving all by itself on a server maintained by Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges).

Tron Legacy will be released sometime in 2011.
