Universal Studios has announced their intention to remake the 1983 sci-fi/horror film Videodrome.

The film tells the story of cable TV channel president Max Renn (originally played by James Woods) who comes across a pirate broadcast of murder, torture and mutilation that takes place in a bright orange room called the ‘Videodrome’. After adding the programming to his station in an attempt to increase its popularity, he begins to learn that the broadcast comes along with a brain tumor inducing signal that metamorphises the viewer’s body and alters their perceptions of reality.

The new version will be modernized as a large-scale sci-fi action thriller and, according to reports, will potentially incorporate nano-technology into the story.

The original film was directed by David Cronenberg who (at least as yet) has no role in the remake.

Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen / Blood and Chocolate / The Brothers Grimm) will write the screenplay and produce the film along with partner Daniel Bobker (The Brothers Grimm /The Skeleton Key).

As yet no director or cast announcements have been made.
