‘Voltron’ Feature Film NOT Impacted by Lawsuit
A lawsuit is underway surrounding the upcoming live-action feature film Voltron. It seems news of the lawsuit has led some websites to speculate that the feature film is now suffering development problems that could prevent it from moving ahead any time soon.
Voltron fans should rest easy with the knowledge that such speculation is nothing more than rumor. The likelihood of the suit having an impact on further development of the feature film is virtually zero.
The lawsuit is between a group of independent film makers and a family company that holds the rights to the Voltron: Defender of the Universe television property. It surrounds a dispute over credit and compensation related to a claim that the rights to the feature film were shopped around illegally prior to the acquisition of those rights by Atlas Entertainment in July.
The suit is not contesting the right of Atlas Entertainment to the feature film, nor is it claiming that World Events and Kickstart (the defendants) didn’t have the rights to sell to Atlas when they did. In other words, this lawsuit has no bearing on Atlas Entertainment’s right to produce a Voltron feature film.
Even the plaintiff’s want the movie to go ahead. James Young, one of the independent producers behind the suit, said: “We want the movie to get made. We just want to make sure we’re involved in some way and are compensated.”
A spokesperson for World Events and Kickstart (the defendants) stated, “This lawsuit is frivolous and without merit, and we will defend ourselves vigorously.” He added confirmation that the suit would not impact development. “Fortunately, these baseless claims do not in any way encumber the film or any other Voltron project, and we are excited to proceed on the long-awaited Voltron feature film with our partner Atlas.”
Voltron has been tentatively scheduled for a 2011 release.
