‘War of the Worlds: Goliath’ Trailer
War of the Worlds: Goliath is billed as a “retro-futuristic steampunk war epic” that acts as an unofficial sequel to H.G. Wells’ classic sci-fi story War of the Worlds.
A trailer has just been released and I like it. Check it out after the jump.
War of the Worlds: Goliath is the first animated feature film from director Joe Pearson. His credits include the direction of two episodes of the TV series Captain Simian & The Space Monkeys as well as Roswell Conspiracies: Aliens, Myths & Legends. He also worked as an animation supervisor on various cartoons including Highlander: The Search for Vengeance.
The story was written by David Abramowitz. Abramowitz was a creative consultant on the Highlander TV series. He also worked as a story editor on the 1984-85 alien invasion series V.
Here’s the film’s synopsis:
In 1900, the Earth was attacked by ruthless invaders from the planet Mars. The Martian’s 80 ft tall, heat-ray spewing, Tripod battle machines laid waste to the planet, but the invaders ultimately fell prey to Earth’s tiny bacteria.
Fourteen years later, Man has rebuilt his shattered world, in large part by utilizing captured Martian technology. Equipped with giant, steam-powered Tripod battle machines, the international rapid reaction force, A.R.E.S., is Mankind’s first line of defense against the return of the rapacious Martian invaders. Based in a massive fortress complex at the south end of Manhattan Island, the young warriors of A.R.E.S. train under the leadership of Secretary of War, Theodore Roosevelt, and the grim General Kushnirov.
And return the Martians do. The rematch finds the multinational squad of the A.R.E.S. battle Tripod’s Goliath’s on the front-lines of a vicious interplanetary offensive when the Martian invaders launch their second invasion using even more advanced alien technology. In the crucible of combat, this young team helming the mighty Goliath will be tested to the limits of their endurance and courage as they fight for Mankind’s very survival under the onslaught of an implacable enemy.

Here’s some medicine for that cough of yours.
Director Joe Pearson responds to the idea that Goliath is a rip off of Scarlet Traces:
“As for being derivative of Scarlet Traces well, LOL, friend. I originally wrote the War of the Worlds: Goliath” storyline and developed the first look on this project in 1998, well before the Darkhouse storyline (which was an excellent story by the way). Conceptualizing a sequel to the H.G. Wells novel, however, is nothing new. A novelization sequel to “The War of the Worlds” was written early in the last century.”

Hi Vonether,
Joe Pearson here.
I agree!
The WOTW team at Tripod, think it would work really well as a series too.
We’ve got a HUGE story arc developed that follows the first film. One that explores the impact of the Second Invasion across the globe and on our core characters.
Aside from the crazy action set pieces and intense air and ground combat with the Invaders, there so many interesting ideas and areas to explore:
If the war drags on for months and months of heavy combat, what’s it effect on the human’s fighting the Martians? On our core team?
On Earth Geopolotics?
If the Martians take and “hold” territory for months/weeks on end, what would that be like?
What if some human states reach an accommodation with the Invaders?
What if they ally with the Martians against other nations?
What if there are “Factions” among the Martians?
What is the backstory to the Martians? Are they merely rapacious aliens, or is their something else driving them to do what they’ve done?
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Well, when the film’s in the can this Winter, hopefully we’ll be able to explore a broadcast partner.
Best,
Joe
