‘Wolverine 2′ Still a Long Way Off
Director Gavin Hood recently attended a special event to promote the soon to be released X-Men Origins: Wolverine DVD and Blu-ray.
During the event Hood confirmed that there are no guarantees that he will return to direct X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 and, even if he does, that the sequel is a long way off.
” I don’t even know if I would be involved,” Hood said. “Right now I’m not attached. Nobody’s attached. They’re developing a script and we’ll see where everybody is. I’m hoping to be shooting something next year and I don’t think that ‘Wolverine’ will be ready for next year. I haven’t been approached one way or another.”
The comment that “nobody’s attached” shouldn’t worry you as it’s not entirely accurate. Last month Fox hired Christopher McQuarrie to write the script so, arguably, a writer is attached. And, of course, Hugh Jackman has made no secret of the fact that he’ll be reprising his lead role in the sequel.
Perhaps what might worry you, at least a little, is that Hood also states decisions on Wolverine 2 very much hinge on the quality of the script and on how well X-Men Origins: Wolverine performs when it is released on DVD and Blu-ray.
“The studio is obviously very cautious,” he adds. “They want to see how Wolverine does on DVD. Let them develop the script, let’s see what the script looks like, let’s see how the studio feels about the script, how Hugh feels about it and then we’ll take it from there.”
Although the above comment can be taken in a variety of ways, there’s no question that X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 is going ahead. The “caution” expressed by Hood most likely relates to the finer details of the production and, importantly, they’re coming from a guy who ultimately may not be involved with the film at all. I also imagine studio’s approach all their films with caution…
