James Marsden & Cameron Diaz in 'The Box'

Richard Kelly has confirmed that production on his upcoming sci-fi film The Box is now finished.

The Box tells the story of Norma (Cameron Diaz) and Arthur Lewis (James Marsden) and their young child, who receive a simple wooden box (with a button) as a gift from a mysterious stranger.  The stranger tells them that the box will magically bestow them $1 million dollars if they press the button, but that the consequences of doing so will be the death of another person elsewhere whom they don’t know.  The movie follows the consequences as they face and act upon their moral dilemma.

Kelly states that principal photography on the $30M film was completed in March 2008 and it took eight months of post-production to include more than 300 visual effects shots.  A final cut was officially handed off to Warner Bros before Christmas.

On the music side, newcomer Win Butler, Regine Chassagne (of Arcade Fire) and Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) have recorded more than 80 minutes of score for the film.  Additionally songs from Grateful Dead, Derek & the Dominos, Wilson Pickett, The Marshall Tucker Band, and Scott Walker will support the score.

“This is my most personal film to date, and I’m very proud of how it turned out,” Kelly said.

The film will run for 1 hour and 55 minutes and is set for release on October 30, 2009.
