One of the ways in which Sci Fi Scoop continues to be able to bring you news day in and day out is through the support of sponsors.

Our latest sponsor is ‘Wake Up…Time To Die‘, a new online business that supplies cool retro styled T-Shirts that draw their inspiration from film.

The image above contains three examples of their designs inspired by The Last Starfighter, Blade Runner and TRON.

If you visit their website and click on one of the designs it will take you to a page that explains the origin of the design.  For example, one of my favorites is the Star League shirt.  Clicking on that design takes you here where you learn that the design is based upon the Star League who recruit new Starfighters for their war against the evil ‘Xur’ and his ‘Ko-Dan Armada’ in The Last Starfighter.

The guys also advise me that they’re going to be adding new designs constantly so keep checking back to see the new designs.

‘Purefold’: A New ‘Blade Runner’ Style Webisode Series

Blade Runner

Ridley Scott (Blade Runner / Gladiator / Alien) has announced that a new division of his commercials Company, RSA Films, is working in conjunction with independent studio Ag8 and a number of Ad Agencies to produce a new sci-fi webisode series titled Purefold.

Purefold will offer up a series of 5-10 minute shorts that will be set some time between now and 2019 – the year when Scott’s 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner takes place.

The choice of date isn’t an arbitrary one. Purefold will have loose ties to Scott’s Blade Runner.

“We don’t take any of the canon or copyrighted assets from the movie,” said Ag8’s founding partner David Bausola. “It’s actually based on the same themes as Blade Runner. It’s the search for what it means to be human and understanding the notion of empathy. We are inspired by Blade Runner.”

The premise of Purefold is certainly going to be interesting since the filmmakers intend to draw it from social networks. Apparently they’ll be monitoring conversations in the social-sphere and commissioning screenwriters to take what is a popular conversation and convert it into a popular futuristic short.

They also intend to bring in advertisers whose products and brands, or perhaps hypothetical futuristic version of those brands, can be featured in the series – just like the advertising you see featured in Blade Runner.

Also interesting is the tantalizing prospect that the series will be released under a Creative Commons licence, meaning fans of the series can take the assets of each episode and remix or reuse them at will, something which is sure to generate a whole host of cool Blade Runner style fan videos.

It is expected Purefold will debut within three months, with the first episodes set about two years into the future.

‘Blade Runner’ Gun Sells For $270,000

Despite initially expecting rougly $100K-$150K, the gun used by Harrison Ford in Warner Bros. 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner has sold at a Live Auctioneers auction for a whopping $270,000.

Only one version of this gun was ever made.  It was built to actually fire by  mating a Steyr-Mannlicher Model .222 SL receiver on to a Charter Arms .44 police bulldog double-action revolver. It features custom amber grips, dual triggers, and futuristic illuminating LEDs (four red and two green) that can be activated by a small switch mounted beneath the barrel.

One lucky collector can now retire Replicants at will.

‘Moon’ Directors Next Project To Be ‘Blade Runner’ Style Sci-Fi

Duncan Jones, the director of indie sci-fi flick Moon, has told Popular Mechanics his next film will be a Blade Runner style sci-fi mystery.

It looks like I’m going to be doing another science-fiction film next. I love Blade Runner, it’s one of my favorite films, and I’ve always been really… depressed that there was never—not a sequel, because I don’t think it’s right to make a sequel about Blade Runner, but no one’s really tried to make a film which was set in the same kind of world or had that same kind of field. So that’s what I’m doing, a big-city mystery story that takes place in a future Berlin.

Given how we’ve been blown away by the images and trailer for Moon, we’ll be keeping our eyes open for that one.

Blade Runner A Walk In The Park Compared To Nervecrackers

robert_rodriguez2

Robert Rodriguez has a new sci-fi action thriller on the horizon titled Nervecrackers that in the past he’s referred to as being “like Blade Runner”.   According to Katey Rich over at Cinema Blend he’s now referring to it as being more Blade Runner than Blade Runner itself, quipping that Ridley Scott’s well regarded movie can be more accurately referred to as Blade Walker if compared to what he intends to deliver in Nervecrackers.

“I used to say it was, it’s kind of like Blade Runner, but that was Blade Walker. This is Blade Runner,” Rodriguez is quoted as saying.

Set in the year 2085, Nervecrackers follows a warrior named Joe who attempts to foil a crime wave in a society that is usually perfect.  The script is finished and filming is expected to start in June.

Rodriguez is aiming for an April 16, 2010 release, which considering the movie hasn’t started production yet, doesn’t give him very long to produce a sci-fi movie that will top Blade Runner. Nonetheless and comparisons aside, his intention is clearly to let fans know he plans to make Nervecrackers live up to its title, and that will no doubt leave many people keen to see this movie.
