Sam Worthington Talks Terminator, Avatar, Titans, Green Lantern

Sam Worthington in 'Terminator Salvation'

Sam Worthington in 'Terminator Salvation'

IESB have posted an excellent run down on a press interview with Sam Worthington on the Terminator Salvation promotion trail.  If you didn’t already know, Worthington is the 32 year old Australian bricklayer turned actor who is about to take the world by storm with his roles in three blockbusters: Terminator Salvation, Avatar, and Clash of the Titans…and maybe a fourth in The Green Lantern.

Here’s a selection of excerpts from the interview categorized by film.  For the full interview, head on over to IESB.

Terminator Salvation

Q: What was your take on your character? How did you see this guy?

Sam: To be honest, I looked at him as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. That was always stuck in my head, about this person waking up in another world and finds himself as they go on this yellow brick road and find the heart, the brain, the sensitivity, and all these characters you meet. And, he’s going to Skynet, which is Oz, to ask the question, “Why am I not fuckin’ dead?” That’s how I looked at it. That’s why I’m wearing a blue coat. Dorothy wears a blue dress. Things like that were stuck into it. Alice in Wonderland, same thing. That’s how I approached the character. I also wanted to be a robot that felt pain, not only physical, mental and emotional, but here’s a guy who wanted to die for his sins and the irony is that he wakes up and he can’t die. He’s stuck and his penance is to suffer, until he transforms and becomes a better human being.

Q: Did James Cameron say anything to you about being in Terminator?

Sam: I told him that they wanted me to do it, and I said, “Here’s my take on the character and here’s what I want to do with it,” and he told me, “Just don’t fuck it up!” That was about it. And then, he went back to filming Avatar. As Jim said, he wants to look at it, as a fan.

‘Clash Of The Titans’ Remake Begins Principal Photography

Robot Owl in Clash of the Titans

The Robot Owl From The 1981 'Clash Of The Titans' Film

Principal photography began yesterday on Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ epic action adventure Clash of the Titans.  The film is being directed by Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) and stars Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation / Avatar) and Academy Award® nominees Liam Neeson (Taken / Schindler’s List) and Ralph Fiennes (the Harry Potter films / The English Patient).

In Clash of the Titans men are pitted against kings and kings against gods as all struggle for power. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Ralph Fiennes), the vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Liam Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny.

Rounding out the cast is Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) as Io, Perseus’ mysterious spiritual guide throughout his journey; Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) as Draco, who takes up his sword to join Perseus’ quest; Jason Flemyng (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) as Acrisius, a one-time king-turned-hideous beast; and Alexa Davalos (Defiance) as Andromeda, a princess doomed to lose her life if Perseus does not succeed.

Clash of the Titans is expected to hit theaters March 26, 2010.

Liam Neeson had signed on for the project some time ago, however until now it remained uncertain as to whether he would still be up to participating following the untimely tragic death of his wife, Natasha Richardson.

Neeson and Fiennes will join an all star cast in Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation / Avatar ), Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale / King Arthur), Alexa Davalos (Chronicles of Riddick / The Mist), Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace), Liam Cunningham (First Knight / The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor), Hans Matheson (Deathwatch / Sherlock Holmes) and Luke Treadaway (Dogging: A Love Story / Brothers of the Head).

Clash of the Titans is scheduled for a March 26, 2010 release

Clash Of The Titans Cast Expands As Script Details Emerge

Clash of the Titans

Worthington, Arterton, Treadaway, Matheson & Cunningham

The Daily Mail has confirmed that Liam Cunningham (First Knight / The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor), Hans Matheson (Deathwatch / Sherlock Holmes) and Luke Treadaway (Dogging: A Love Story / Brothers of the Head) will all join Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation / Avatar) and Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace / RocknRolla / Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) in Louis Leterrier’s remake of Clash of the Titans.  Further, Liam Neeson has reportedly been cast as Zeus, but following the death of his wife Natasha Richardson, it is not yet known if he’ll still be up to participating.

Gemma Arterton has also confirmed with Empire Magazine that the script to the remake will be very different to the 1981 Harry Hamlin classic.  For a start, she plays the demi-goddess Io who is a character that did not feature in the original film but who will feature highly in the new film as the love interest for Sam Worthington’s Persus.

From Empire Magazine:

“My part is… the coolest part,” she laughed. “Io’s not in the original film. Perseus falls in love with her and then [CENSORED FOR TINY SPOILER]. It’s a really great part.”

“The script is very different,” she continued. “Obviously the story is the story, but it’s much more about Perseus’ mission, and how he deals with being the son of Zeus, and things like that, so it feels a little more about him, and about the issues around that.”

Clash of the Titans is scheduled for a March 26, 2010 release.

Gemma Arterton Cast In Clash Of The Titans

Gemma Arterton

Gemma Arterton to star with Sam Worthington in Clash of the Titans

Gemma Arterton, aka Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace, has confirmed she has a starring role in the upcoming Legendary Pictures remake of Clash of the Titans.

Arterton will play the role of Io and joins Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation / Avatar) who will play the lead character of Perseus.

The story follows Perseus who embarks on a quest to save a Princess (Andromeda) and along the way is forced to battle various mythical beasts, including Medusa and the Kraken.  In Greek mythology, Io was a priestess of Hera in Argos who after being seduced by Zeus is turned into a Heifer (cow).  It is uncertain how the role of Io fits into the new film.

23 year old Arterton previously starred in RocknRolla, A Deal is a Deal, and St. Trinian’s.  She also has three movies slated for release during 2009-2010: The Disappearance of Alice Creed, The Boat That Rocked, and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

The original Clash of the Titans was directed by Desmond Davis and released in 1981.  Despite being released on the same day as Raiders of the Lost Ark, Titans was highly successful and went on to be the 11th highest grossing film of the year.  The new film, to be directed by Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk / Transporter 2 / Unleashed) has an estimated budget of $70M, some $55M more than its predecessor.

Filming is expected to begin April/May.

Clash of the Titans is scheduled for a March 26, 2010 release.
