‘Red Sonja’ To Start Shooting In 2010

Red Sonja

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the Conan remake but what about the remake of Red Sonja? It’s been more than a year of virtual silence since the female barbarian movie was announced and since we learned Rose McGowan (Charmed /Grindhouse / Planet Terror) had been cast as the sword wielding flame-haired heroine.  Is Red Sonja still happening?  Apparently so.

Executive Producer Joe Gatta has announced that the film was merely delayed due to economic issues but that it is definitely going ahead with filming scheduled for 2010.  Amazingly (or concerningly) Gatta also states the film should hit theaters the same year.

“Because of certain issues and the economy, we had to change our plan a bit,” says Gatta. “It’s frustrating because we thought we’d make the movie last year, before Conan.”

Gatta has also confirmed Red Sonja will be an origin story and will ignore the 1985 movie that starred Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger (thankfully).

Red Sonja will be directed by Douglas Aarniokoski (Highlander: Endgame).  Aarniokoski was also assistant director on The Crow: City of Angels and Resident Evil: Extinction.

And for the record, most of the talk lately about Conan has only been unsubstantiated rumors about who will star and who will direct.  Nothing official has yet to emerge on either of those fronts.

Rumor: Marcus Nispel To Direct ‘Conan’

Marcus Nispel is on the right (if you couldn't tell)

Possible 'Conan' Director Marcus Nispel is on the right (if you couldn't tell)

An unnamed but apparently ‘impeccable source’ has told CHUD Marcus Nispel has officially signed on to direct the new Conan film.

46 year old Nispel’s previous directing credits include Friday the 13th, Pathfinder and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I’d write more however it should also be remembered that in May CHUD also reported that James McTeigue had been hired to direct Conan. Back then the news came from a “very trustworthy, very much correct in the past source.”  That’s not quite as good as “impeccable” but it’s close.

Although this latest news may eventually prove accurate (and CHUD’s source assures them the deal is done and this is no rumor), it may nonetheless be wise to chalk Nispel’s involvement up to rumor until an official announcement is made.

Rumor: James McTeigue to Direct ‘Conan’

Conan

Yesterday we learned that Brett Ratner’s time schedule had precluded him from sitting in the Conan director’s chair and that the producers were looking for a new director.

CHUD are now reporting that according to an insider a director has been chosen: James McTeigue.

McTiegue was an assistant director on all three Matrix movies and also directed V for Vendetta (four of our favorite movies of all-time).  He’s also the director on the new Ninja Assassin movie (which looks awesome) and is apparently in talks to direct X-Men Origins: Wolverine.  He’s no stranger to directing action, so whilst on one hand losing Brett Ratner is a major blow for the production, gaining McTeigue is a major bonus.

That is, of course, if this isn’t just another rumor.

Conan presently remains on Lionsgates 2010 release list.

Brett Ratner Won’t Be Directing ‘Conan’

Conan

Three weeks ago we reported that Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand / Red Dragon / Prison Break) was actively attached to Lionsgate’s Conan.  At the time, it was thought Ratner would take the directors chair.  Apparently that is no longer the case according to Conan producer Joe Gatta.

“We’re currently in the process of hiring a director,” Gatta told Empire Magazine. “For the past six months we were discussing the movie with Brett Ratner, and for more timing issues than anything else we had to part ways with Brett. We all wanted him to do it, believe me; just the timing didn’t work. But you never know what can happen.”

Obviously the hope remains that Ratner’s schedule might somehow work out to be more flexible, but with Conan’s start date scheduled for August 24, it would seem a slim hope at best.  The producers will be forced to choose a new director in time for their casting call.

Gatta adds, “We’ll have an open casting call: as soon as we hire our director the search is on.”

Conan presently remains on Lionsgates 2010 release list.

‘Conan’ To Be Cool, Contemporary And Rated ‘R’

Conan

We’ve known that Lionsgate are looking to bring Conan (as in the Barbarian) back to the big screen for some time.  Since Lionsgate’s announcement to move forward with the film there have been a few rumors circulating regarding who will direct the movie, what it will be rated, and where it’s production is currently at.

Movieline recently spoke with Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand / Red Dragon / Prison Break) who has been rumored to direct Conan, during which he clarified a few things.

First, although he hasn’t outright confirmed he is definitely going to be directing Conan, he did say he’s actively involved:

Yes. That’s something I’m actively attached to.

And what of that PG-13 rumor?

No. That’s ridiculous. It’s a hard R.

And where is the movie at?

We’re just budgeting the script and trying to figure out when’s a good time and where to shoot it. It’s kind of a global landscape.

He also added that he’s developing the script, something that he elaborated on to MTV a month ago:

“The script is very cool, contemporary. It’s not an homage. It’s not a remake, really. It’s going back to the original source material — the mythology of the characters.”

Conan presently remains on Lionsgates 2010 release list.
