‘The Green Lantern’ Will Be Made In Australia For $150M

Green Lantern

New South Wales premier Nathan Rees has announced that Warner Bros. and DC Comics will make their live-action feature film adaptation of The Green Lantern at Fox Studios in Sydney, Australia.

Reese confirmed that the $150 million budgeted film will create 500 jobs and include a “substantial investment” in digital effects work in Australia.

The state of New South Wales outbid rival states Victoria and Queensland for the job.

“The decision by Warner Bros. to locate the production in New South Wales is tangible evidence that having a competitive incentive scheme in place returns positive results,” Fox Studios Australia CEO Nancy Romano said.

A part of the attraction for Hollywood to take its films to Australia relates to the decline in the value of the Australian dollar which, ironically, is good for the Australian film industry – at least in terms of attracting offshore investment.

Pre-production on The Green Lantern is set to begin in July, and filming is scheduled to start in November.  Martin Campbell (Casino Royale / The Legend of Zorro) will direct the film.

Although no cast members have been announced, Brian Austin Green (aka Derek Reese in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) has been openly campaigning for the role. Although he has not being actively considered by the film studio, he has surprisingly received an overwhelming positive response from Green Lantern fans across the internet.  Other actors who’s names have been rumored as being under consideration include Chris Pine and Sam Worthington.

Warner hopes to release the film in December 2010.
