The recent trailers for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince have been excellent, painting a picture of the new film to be very dark and filled with magic based action. However, this is not entirely the theme of the movie.

The first few trailers released for the movie were far from dark, instead showcasing a more romantic and comical element to the film.  In a recent interview with Sci Fi Wire, Director David Yates has shifted the ‘romantic’ perception of the film a step further by referring to the Half-Blood Prince as ’sexualized’.

“It’s actually about sex, potions and rock ‘n’ roll,” says Yates. “It’s a wonderfully fun, slightly rebellious, quite naughty stage of teenage life. When you’re kind of discovering the opposite sex. … In the previous film, it was about the first kiss. This film is a bit more sexualized than that. You know, in a way. We don’t see sex, but it’s kind of in there. And the relationships are a bit more complicated and romantic and convoluted. So we’re pushing into new emotional and kind of physical territory for Harry Potter, you know, in a way, so it’s quite playful and fun.”

And what does he have to say about the comical side of the film?

“The previous film was, you know, we really enjoyed making the last film. … I liked the intensity of the story that we did last time. But … this has intensity, but it’s very playful, and there are some terrifically funny scenes. And six is a much lighter, more playful book than five was.”

He goes on to say, “It still has some tremendous intensity at the end of the story, but it’s got lots of laughs, too, and for me as a director, what’s lovely is to change gears a little bit, and that’s why I wanted to do it. I didn’t want to make a kind of film about teenage angst; I wanted to make a film about teenage romance, and so, when I took over for Mike Newell—Mike Newell did the fourth film—I said, ‘You [got a chance to do] the kind of teenage love side of things, and so now I’ve got a bit of that to do.’ And it’s really fun to come back and do it.”

Sci Fi News summary Tuesday 20th Jan 2009

Iron ManI Am Legend – Francis Lawrence has been out promoting the new NBC magic-meets-a-modern-medieval-monarchy soap opera Kings and has dropped a few comments relating to I Am Legend.   Lawrence directed the 2007 movie starring Will Smith and it looks like he wants to do a prequel.  Apparently Will Smith wants in as well.  There’s only one question on fans lips:  why?

Iron Man leads the 7th Annual VES Awards – Golden Globe’s and Academy Awards mean a lot less to many sci-fi fans than do the VES awards, where some of the unsung heroes of the sci-fi genre get their well deserved recognition – those tireless but talented people who bring imagination to life through visual effects.  The 7th Annual VES Awards Ceremony is scheduled for February 21, 2009.  Of the nominees Iron Man is the stand-out with five category nominations including best visual effects in a visual effects-driven movie, best single visual effect of the year, outstanding animated character in a live-action movie, outstanding models and miniatures in a feature, and outstanding special effects in a movie.  It’s up against some stiff competition though – if you want to see the extensive full list of nominations, head on over to The Visual Effects Society.
