Whilst appearing on ‘Friday Night with JonathanRoss’ actor Rhys Ifans has confirmed he has been cast in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

In the video below, he confirms his casting at the 5:55 mark at which point he states he has been cast as a wizard, which has led to speculation that he will appear in the role of Xenophilius Lovegood.

Since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be delivered as a two-part movie, it remains uncertain as to whether he will appear in one or both parts.

Death Hallows Pt. 1 is scheduled for release on the 19th November 2010.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Internet Trailer

Warner Brothers have released a new internet trailer for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Unlike the previous teasers and featurettes, this trailer leaves out the strong romantic-comedy theme of the movie completely, and as a result it seems to resemble the tone of the book upon which it is based more closely.   It’s certainly the best teaser for the movie to date.

Because J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is such a long book (608 pages) Warner Bros. have decided to tell the story across two movies.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 will reach theaters on 19 November, 2010.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 will reach theaters on 15 July, 2011.

Second Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince featurette online

Today Australia have presented a new Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince featurette and Trailer Addict have made it available or us online.   It’s much better than the last one as it spends more time showing clips from the film than talking about comedy and romance.  Still, they do talk about it and with ‘love potions’ in the air the film just doesn’t look as dark as the book on which it is based…

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince of Romantic Comedy

MTV have released a featurette on Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.  I didn’t think anyone could do it, but it’s topped the Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen featurette for this weekends best attempt to dampen my spirits towards a film.

“I think this film strikes more of a balance between the darkness and the comedy,” says Daniel Radcliffe.  “I suupose this year we focus a lot on sort of the romantic elements of the film.”

Wasn’t the franchise supposed to be getting darker, just like the books do?

David Yates, Director says, “We’ve got all of the angst out in the last film, this year we’re just having a bit of a laugh.”

Well if ever there was a statement to stop me forking out money at the theatres that was it.  How can the angst be over?  In the last movie they finally get the society at large to accept that the badest dude of all time has returned from the grave, something the entire series of films has been slowly building up to.  Isn’t that when the angst really starts?  Well that’s when it starts in the book at least, but it seems David Yates has decided to take quite a bit of liberty with regards to the book:

“We’ve introduced a sequenece that wasn’t in the book, Death Eaters attacking the Weasley’s home,” he said.

There’s only so much time to tell the story of the book in a movie format – if they are adding something that’s not in the book, that can only mean they are removing things that are in the book.  Yes there is some romance and comedic elements in the book, but not as much as they seem to be alluding to here.

As I watch this I’m doing so with a die hard Potter devotee watching over my shoulder.  She’s read all the books at least five times.  And her response as she watched the clip:

“Oh you’re kidding me!  The Potter story is a classic, a timeless classic.  You only get one real shot to transfer that onto film!  They’re going to ruin their one shot.  How do these people get their jobs!!!”

Here’s the featurette:

Sci Fi News Summary (for the last few days)

Michael Shanks to appear in Stargate UniverseHere’s the sci fi news for the last few days that never made it to a full article, all in a nice neat summarized nutshell.  As usual, there’s no spoilers so read on safely:

Day One – NBC have given the green-light to a new pilot titled Day OneDay One is sci-fi drama creation of Jesse Alexander (Heroes/ Alias / Lost).  The pilot will follow a group of survivors as they struggle in a post-apocalyptic Earth to both survive and discover the cause of the catastrophic event that has decimated the planet.  Sounds similar to Jericho on face value, but since there’s very little information available at this time, we’ll have to wait and cross our fingers for some originality.

Stargate Universe – Michael Shanks, aka Dr. Daniel Jackson from Stargate SG-1 looks set to make a cameo in Stargate Universe.  In an exclusive interview with SCI FI Wire he said, “I talked to [executive producer] Brad Wright a couple of weeks ago, and he asked me if I’d be interested in doing a cameo in the Universe pilot, and I of course said I would be.  And there’s a great deal of talk about [it]. … They’ve got a script going and everything like that.”  However according to Gateworld it will most likely be a small part early on in the pilot given that there has been no indication that Daniel Jackson will join the crew of the ancient ship Destiny.  Makes sense.

Forbidden Planet -  A remake of the popular 1956 film is on its way from Warner Brothers and the latest news is James Cameron (Aliens / The Abyss/ Terminator) has his eyes on the directors chair.  This would put Cameron in collaboration with J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5 / Changeling) who has written the story for the film.  Read the rest of this entry »
