We’ve got an exclusive new teaser poster from Sandy Collora’s highly anticipated indie sci-fi film Hunter Prey. The new poster continues the trend of communicating a very cool 70’s retro feel to the film. We’ve also included the two previous posters below (just click on the thumbnails). Enjoy!
Whilst you wait with baited breath for your chance to see Indie sci-fi film Hunter Prey, you might want to head on over to Indy Mogul where a new interview has been posted with Hunter Prey Director Sandy Collora.
Whilst the interview doesn’t add a great deal of new information on when we might get to see his highly anticipated first feature film, Collora does confirm that the film has been picked up by international sales group Moviehouse Entertainment and adds he’ll be looking for (and hopefully find) further interest at Cannes.
Where will we be able to see “Hunter Prey” when it’s released, and what other projects do you have coming up that we can keep our eyes open for in the future?
SC: Regarding the first part of the question, the answer is simply that I do not know yet. The film should be done by the end of June. After that, we’ll have to see how everything plays out. Once I deliver the film, I’m not responsible for when or how it’s going to get released. There’s so much involved in all that stuff, its all the business end of things and I don’t get involved in that stuff. I know the initial response to the film on line, has been incredible. Everyone seems to be digging it, but marketing and selling a film to buyers, from what I’m told, is quite different from selling a film to it’s audience. Go figure… I dunno, I just work here.
Moviehouse in London, an international sales group has already picked us up, so we’ll see how things go at Cannes. As far as other projects, I’ve already had a few options present themselves, just as result of all the buzz Hunter Prey is getting. I’ve got a couple of things up my sleeve… Stay tuned.
The interview is lengthy and contains detailed information about Sandy Collora’s filmmaking journey that is insightful and well worth a read. Read the full interview here.
Additionally, here’s a new and retro-cool teaser poster for the film:
Anticipation is growing for Sandy Collora’s Hunter Prey. In an interview with Co-Writer/Director Sandy Collora we recently learned the trailer will be released next week. Until then, to wet your appetite further and to show just how cool this film is looking, here’s a ‘quick view’ collection of all the images that have been released to date:
Ask us what our top five most anticipated sci-fi films of the year are and you’ll hear ‘Sandy Collora’s Hunter Prey‘ included in the mix. If you’re one of the few sci-fi fans who haven’t yet heard of Sandy Collora or Hunter Prey, then you should take the time to visit io9 who, back in Nov 08 provided an in depth look at the film via a comprehensive interview with him.
If you want the short version: Collora is the filmmaker who in 2003 scored a demi-god hit with his fan-made short film, Batman: Dead End (the one where Batman battles against the Joker, an Alien, and a Predator). Since then he’s had a legion of fans chomping at the bit to see what he can do with a full length feature film. Hunter Prey is that film.
The story follows a team of special forces commandos who must recapture an escaped alien prisoner after the military transport ship carrying it crashes on a desolate and hostile planet. Although we’re yet to see any footage (more on when that will change included in the interview below), the first wave of stills had many fans comparing elements of the images to Star Wars. Further, our own discussions about the film have regularly evoked elemental comparisons with James Cameron’s Terminator, Ron Moore’s Battlestsar Galactica, Wolfgang Petersen’s Enemy Mine, Star Trek, 2001 A Space Odyssey, and more. Whether these comparisons turn out to be accurate or not, the reality remains that yes, we’re very eager to see this movie.
So when will we see it? Many people were expecting Hunter Prey to be released last month but once March came, and with no word on the status of the film to hand, the usual speculation that something was wrong began to surface. Fortunately we can now confirm that there is no further need for such speculation for yesterday Sandy Collora gave us a status update, sent over a few new never before seen images, and fielded a few of our questions with answers that have only served to heighten our anticipation.
One of the most eagerly awaited but largely forgotten sci-fi flicks of 2009 is Hunter Prey, an independent film from NBV Productions.
Hunter Prey, which runs by the working title AKA, is the first original feature film from writer/director Sandy Collora. Collora became an overnight sensation in 2003 with the release of his independentAliens vs Predator vs Joker vs Batmanfilm, Batman: Dead End, and whilst his work on this film blew up a legal storm, it also built him an army of impressed fans. Once he released the first images from Hunter Prey (as seen throughout this article) the film shot into many peoples favorite lists for 2009.
What his Hunter Prey about? That was a question asked almost half a year ago by Annalee Newitz over at io9 during an interview with Sandy Collora in which he replied:
At its core, this is a picture about survival. Being able to adapt to your surroundings and persevere, to survive at all costs and prevail against incredible odds to complete an objective. That’s something that I’ve had some experience dealing with in my own life and career, so there were a lot of personal feelings and emotions to draw from. The film centers around a crew of special forces commandos who must recapture an alien prisoner that has escaped after the military transport ship carrying it crashes on a desolate and hostile planet. There are subtle political and environmental overtones that I certainly don’t hit anyone over the head with at all, but that will hopefully make you think about things like war, politics and current events, by presenting them in situations cinematically from a uniquely different perspective. That’s one of the great things about Science Fiction; You can tell the audience something in a very unique way by using the guise of a futuristic world or society that can reflect our own.
The film, very much like the approach Jim Cameron took with “The Terminator”, is a very small piece of a much larger picture. It concentrates on how the bigger situation (which in this case, is interplanetary war) is affecting the two main characters, who are now separated from it, and how they relate and react to their situation and each other as a result of it. As the story unfolds and more things are revealed about the characters and what their relationship is, we had to create in a sense, what we could not show. This was a very interesting challenge not only for co-writer Nick Damon and myself, but for the actors as well because through their performances and the dialogue, they had to build in the audience’s imagination, what we couldn’t afford to actually build on screen.
Although interest in Hunter Prey has been high, the production has been strangely quiet. It was scheduled to be released this month but clearly the goal posts have now shifted. I’ve heard some people mention their concern that the film may never see the light of day, but my guess is we’re only looking at a delay. Collora is booked to attend the MONSTERPALOOZA, a 3 day event taking place at the Burbank Airport Marriott Hotel dedicated to the art & FX of monsters. The event takes place over 3 days from May 29-31 and there’s been no change to any publicity surrounding the event related to Hunter Prey’s ‘coming soon’ status. As far as I’m concerned that’s a good sign, so it seems we’ll just have to wait.
Why have I posted this article if there’s no real updated news surrounding the project? Because I like many others are keen to see this movie, and maybe a little ‘bump’ will generate the update so many fans want to hear.
In the meantime, if you haven’t seen Collora’s cult Batman movie, do yourself a favor:
