Willem Dafoe has joined the cast of Disney’s John Carter of Mars.

John Carter of Mars is a new epic feature film adapted from the Edgar Rice Burroughs sci-fi story that follows a Civil War veteran who, after being transported to Mars, finds himself partially super-powered thanks to the planet’s low gravity.  There he becomes embroiled in a battle between the Martians and invading aliens.

It is not yet known what role Dafoe will play in the film.  He will join Taylor Kitsch (aka Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine) who has been cast in the title role of John Carter and Lynn Collins (aka Silverfox in X-Men Origins: Wolverine) who will play Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Mars.  Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3 / Idiocracy / Charlotte’s Web) is also rumored to star.

Wall-E writer/director Andrew Stanton is the writer/director behind the project which has been likened to James Cameron’s Avatar in scope.

Dafoe has a number of films coming out over the next year including the sci-fi vampire thriller Daybreakers. Watch the trailer and learn more about Daybreakers here.

John Carter of Mars is expected in theaters sometime during 2012.

Thomas Haden Church Joining ‘John Carter Of Mars’?

Thomas Haden Church as Sandman in Spider-Man 3

Thomas Haden Church as Sandman in Spider-Man 3

Speaking with Reeltalk veteran actor Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3 / Idiocracy / Charlotte’s Web) has stated he’ll probably be joining the cast of John Carter of Mars in what he refers to as a “very dramatic role.”

Once official, he’ll join X-Men Origins: Wolverine’s Taylor Kitsch (aka Gambit) and Lynn Collins (aka Silverfox) who have both been cast in the leads of the new Disney sci-fi epic.

John Carter of Mars is adapted from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ sci-fi story the follows a Civil War veteran who, after being transported to Mars, finds himself partially super-powered thanks to the planet’s low gravity.  There he becomes embroiled in a battle between the Martians and invading aliens.  The story adaptation is in the hands of Wall-E writer/director Andrew Stanton.

Considering one of the best things about Spider-Man 3 was the portrayal of Flint Marko (aka Sandman) by Thomas Haden Church, this bodes well for Disney’s new film which is being hailed as “epic” and “Avatar big”.

John Carter of Mars is expected in theaters during 2012.

Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins Cast In ‘John Carter of Mars’

Recent talk about the possibility of a Gambit feature film has been accompanied with the concern that Taylor Kitsch, who played Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, may not yet be capable of carrying a film as the lead.  It seems those concerns are over for Kitsch has now been cast as John Carter of Mars in an epic new Disney sci-fi movie of the same name.

Just how epic is this movie?  Wall-E writer/director Andrew Stanton is the writer/direct of John Carter of Mars. That’s probably all we need to hear, although you can add the fact that Empire Mag are referring to the film as being “Avatar big“.  Whether or not that’s accurate, it nonetheless gives you an idea that this is going to be no small film.

Taylor Kitsch will be joined by fellow X-Men Origins: Wolverine star Lynn Collins, who played Silverfox in the Hugh Jackman film.  She’ll be playing Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Mars.  I can’t resist mentioning the irony that Gambit will end up snaring Wolverine’s girl.

Now that Kitsch is the lead in a huge movie, how long do you think it will be before his role in a Gambit feature film is announced?  I’m guessing not long at all.

John Carter of Mars is expected in theaters during 2012.
