NBC have announced that the first season of Merlin, a series that tells the story of the King Arthur legend from a time when Merlin and Arthur are young, will air on Sundays commencing June 21 at 8pm. It has been slated to replace Kings (which itself only premiered last Sunday).
The first season of Merlin consists of a 13-part medieval drama centred in the mythical city of Camelot. In the story Merlin is a young man who’s magical powers continue to grow, and who establishes a not so friendly relationship with Prince Arthur upon arriving in Camelot. The series has plenty of magic, sword fights, battles against the undead, monsters and even dragons.
The character of Merlin is played by little known Colin Morgan (who also appeared in Doctor Who ‘Midnight’). Arthur is played by Bradley James (who’s only other appearances were Dis/Connected and a spot in an episode of Inspector Lewis). Both are virtual newcomers to the screen but you wouldn’t know it as both are perfectly suited to their roles.
Richard Wilson (Doctor Who ‘The Doctor Dances’ and ‘The Empty Child’ as well as 17 feature films) plays Merlin’s mentor Gaius, whilst Anthony Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer / Doctor Who ‘School Reunion‘) plays Uther Pendragon, the King and Arthurs father. The series also stars Katie McGrath as Morgana, Angel Coulby as Gwen, and Michelle Ryan (Bionic Woman / Doctor Who ‘Planet of the Dead‘) as Nimueh. John Hurt (Alien / V for Vendetta / Outlander) provides the voice of the major Dragon in the series.
The series has already been green lit for a second season after drawing excellent audience numbers in the UK.
Merlin has also been nominated in this years Visual Effects Society Awards for Outstanding Matte Paintings in a Broadcast Program.
