Neill Blomkamp’s Next Sci-Fi Movie Gets The Greenlight

District 9 director Neill Blomkamp will immediately commence writing and preparing the visual effects for his next, and as yet untitled, sci-fi film, after Media Rights Capital committed to fund it.

The film, which is being billed as a violent pic that will take place entirely on another planet, will go into production mid 2010.  It will also carry a larger budget than the $30M used to produce District 9, although the budget will still be modest by comparison to many Hollywood sci-fi blockbusters.

“I’m not particularly interested in massive budget films, or creating huge spectacles that some young directors might be attracted to,” Blomkamp said. “Hopefully, this will be a bit unique, very much a reflection of me. It is absolutely another science fiction film, quite different from District 9, but some of the blending of genres and the tone might be within the same realm.”

Peter Jackson, who mentored Blomkamp throughout the production of District 9, is not involved.
