Touchstone Pictures’ Surrogates and Overture Films’ Pandorum continue to perform poorly at the box office.
Surrogates has only managed to pull in $19M to date (domestically) whilst Pandorum has struggled for its $5.8M.
By comparision, Surrogates has drawn 23% of its $80M budget and Pandorum has pulled 13% of its $40M budget.
Surrogates and Pandorum perform poorly at the box office
Touchstone Pictures’ Surrogates came in second and Overture Films’ Pandorum limped in sixth at the box office over the weekend as the two sci-fi films bombed behind the family cartoon Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
Whilst Touchstone had hoped Surrogates would be the top earner, Surrogates only managed to claw back $15M of its $80M budget as Cloudy stole $24.6M of its thunder from its second week of release. Pandorum faired worse for Overture, pulling in only $4.8M, less than half of what was reasonably expected from the R-rated film.
Although typically a quieter time of the year at the box office, pundits speculate that a large part of both films’ poor performance is a result of poor reviews. Of course, those reviewers would claim that the reviews are the result of poor movies. Personally, I prefer to make up my own mind, so I’ll be heading to the theater to see both films (if for nothing else but to support the sci-fi genre). Will you?

Bloody-Disgusting are reporting that a special screening of Christian Alvart’s Pandorum is going to take place a day before it hits theaters in Orlando, FL, and that they’ve got 50 free tickets available.
To get one, all you have to do is turn up (at 6:30pm on Thursday, September 24) to the AMC Altamonte Mall 18 (433 E. Altamonte Ave., Altamonte Springs, FL 32701). The free passes will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.
The screening takes place at 8PM. Good luck!
