Back in June Executive Producer Joe Gatta announced that a new feature film based on the Marvel character Red Sonja was definitely going ahead sometime in 2010 (perhaps kicking off in February).
Rose McGowan (Charmed /Grindhouse / Planet Terror), who was cast an eternity ago in the lead role, has now confirmed that she’s still contracted to play the sword wielding flame-haired heroine.
There’s been a lot of talk lately about the Conan remake but what about the remake of Red Sonja? It’s been more than a year of virtual silence since the female barbarian movie was announced and since we learned Rose McGowan (Charmed /Grindhouse / Planet Terror) had been cast as the sword wielding flame-haired heroine. Is Red Sonja still happening? Apparently so.
Executive Producer Joe Gatta has announced that the film was merely delayed due to economic issues but that it is definitely going ahead with filming scheduled for 2010. Amazingly (or concerningly) Gatta also states the film should hit theaters the same year.
“Because of certain issues and the economy, we had to change our plan a bit,” says Gatta. “It’s frustrating because we thought we’d make the movie last year, before Conan.”
Gatta has also confirmed Red Sonja will be an origin story and will ignore the 1985 movie that starred Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger (thankfully).
Red Sonja will be directed by Douglas Aarniokoski (Highlander: Endgame). Aarniokoski was also assistant director on The Crow: City of Angels and Resident Evil: Extinction.

And for the record, most of the talk lately about Conan has only been unsubstantiated rumors about who will star and who will direct. Nothing official has yet to emerge on either of those fronts.
