Spider-Man 4 has yet to enter production but that hasn’t stopped Sony Pictures Entertainment from hiring screenwriter James Vanderbilt to pen Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6.
Both Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6 will have an interconnected storyline. Word is Vanderbilt’s original Spider-Man 4 script was also to be connected to Spider-Man 5, but the idea was scrapped due to the logistics of filming the fourth and fifth films back to back.

James Vanderbilt (Darkness Falls) wrote the first Spider-Man 4 script.
David Lindsay-Abaire (Robots / Inkheart) was hired to rewrite it.
Now Gary Ross (Pleasantville / Creature From The Black Lagoon) has been tapped to rewrite it even further.
The reasons for Ross’s involvement are not known although some reports indicate it is more to do with his growing relationship with Sony Pictures than problems with the script. I would imagine its more likely both.
Tobey Maguire is returning as Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man), Kirsten Dunst will reprise her role as Mary Jane, and Sam Raimi will once again be sitting in the directors chair.
Spiderman 4 heads into production early next year with a scheduled release date of May 6, 2011.

With a host of Marvel movies looming on the horizon screenwriter Zak Penn (X2 / X-Men: The Last Stand / The Incredible Hulk) arguably has the toughest job of them all. As the writer of The Avengers it is Penn’s job to bring all the crossover storyline threads together from at least Iron Man 2, Captain America and Thor. I say “at least” because there may be more overlapping threads and tie-ins to other Marvel movies that he has to deal with too, such as Spider-Man 4.
Next week Penn has a meeting with some of the writing teams on the movies mentioned above to work out how they’re going to align the plot threads and bring them all together.
“They’re doing Captain America and Thor first, and then Avengers is coming out,” Penn said on Tuesday at the Los Angeles Film Festival. “They want to see that they’re all connected, not like the Fantastic Four can’t come into the X-Men world, like I was told [by Fox]. I’m taking a meeting next week with the Thor and Captain America people, and we are all going to get together, and I will see what is going to happen. I’ll see where they are leaving the characters; it’s pretty complicated. … There’s a board that is tracking what is happening. [We'll see] how this movie overlaps in that movie. … Marvel is autonomous now. It is night and day: Everyone has read every comic. They know how to make a cool movie.”
So does Penn think The Avengers will be a cool movie?
“It’s hard to make a good movie,” he said. “We all have the best intentions, and it still might suck.”
At least he’s being honest.
Iron Man 2 will be released May 7, 2010
Spiderman 4 will be released on May 6, 2011
Thor will be released Jun 17, 2011
Captain America will be released July 22, 2011
The Avengers will be released May 4, 2012

Producer Todd Black has confirmed that Kirsten Dunst is “definitely on board” to reprise her role as Mary Jane in Spider-Man 4.
Black also killed fan speculation that the vampire Morbius will be featured in the film. Who will the villain be? Cryptically Black said:
“We’re just coming up with who the villain’s going to be now. We’ll be shooting in New York again. Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick, because it’ll be a big part of New York.”
One particularly souring rumor going around is that Spider-Man 4 will feature a wedding between Mary Jane and Peter Parker. In what can only be described as music to my ears, Black states he has no knowledge of a marital subplot.
With memories of Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer still floating in my mind, let’s hope he’s not just covering up script plots and that the wedding idea really is a rumor because I can categorically say if Spider-Man 4 has a wedding in it, count me out.
