The Prize: An Alien VCD from Sideshow Collectibles (Click to enlarge)
Throughout the month of May we’ve been hosting a competition in conjunction with Sideshow Collectible’s to determine which are the ‘Top 10 Best Aliens in History‘. The prize: a Medicom Toy Corporation’s high-quality Alien Vinyl Collectible Doll (VCD) valued at US $69.99!!
We would like to thank all 178 people who took the time to enter the competition. The criteria for selecting our winner, as per the competition guidelines, required that we compile all the entries received to find out which 10 aliens received the most votes with the winning entry to be selected from one of those.
There were many great and thoughtful entries submitted. We also received a high number of individual votes for very obscure alien names including those from classic sci-fi feature films of the 50’s and 60’s (some that we had to double check to see if they weren’t made up!). By the final day of the competition we had narrowed down our picks to three:

Whilst talking with Cinematical about his new horror flick Drag Me To Hell, Sam Raimi has stated he’s learned a lot about what people did and didn’t like with his Spiderman movies.
“I learn lessons on every single picture I make,” he said. “I learned a lot on [Drag Me To Hell], about timing, and that you don’t have to give up any character at the expense of horror. It’s just an excuse that maybe I’ve used in the past. As far as Spider-Man, I’ve learned a lot of lessons about what people didn’t like and missteps that I’d made. But I learned those lessons on the previous two, I was just a little quieter about them. I made a lot of mistakes, and it’s part of the reason I so want to make this next story of Peter Parker.”
He also feels he has a better understanding of Spiderman than he’s given credit for, that he’s learned a lot from his “missteps”, and that his goal is to make a fourth film that is true to the character.
“I really think I know in my heart who the character is, and I haven’t quite been able to sing the song yet, or bring it out to the extent or degree of detail that I feel in my heart that I can. And I may not be successful, but I still feel like I know it better than I’m able to play it; I feel like the kid that really practiced at the piano recital, with years of comic books, and when I got to my other recitals, I sometimes made some missteps with them. There’s a whole crowd there and they think that’s as well as I know the piece, but I really do know it a lot better than that and I would like one more chance at that character. The Spider-Man films, I’ve made mistakes, but I really do look at them as things that I’ve learned, and hope that when I apply what I’ve learned to this next one, I really make a film that people enjoy and is really true to the character in a fresh, original way. That’s my goal.”
Just don’t make another movie with Peter Parker whining about having super-powers. Not once do we want to hear him cry, “I want to be normal.” Promise that and we’ll give Spiderman 4 a chance.

Sam Raimi has told reporters that he has a meeting scheduled with Kirsten Dunst to talk with her about reprising her role as Mary Jane Watson in Spiderman 4.
“I’m hoping that she is going to come aboard, and I’ve got a meeting coming up with her,” Raimi said. “I think she would like to. But I don’t want to speak on behalf of her.”
He was also asked about the possibility of Spiderman 4 going edgier and darker in the wake of The Dark Knight, to which he reiterated that he hasn’t seen the script yet but he’s hoping for writer David Lindsay-Abaire to produce a “really good one” from which he will determine the direction of the fourth movie.
“Whatever it is, I think will be a direct result of the best style to bring about our writer’s screenplay. And as soon as I read that, I will know what that is. Edgy could be a direction, but I don’t think it will be applied without really understanding the character’s journey from the inside out first and then figuring out the best way to bring that about.
And then as far as the other influences, making it different from the other films, … I hope we don’t react to these very good and sometimes bad superhero movies around us. I hope that we just take ever deeper into the truth of who Peter Parker really is. As a human being and the unique character, and that we celebrate that, which is a lot of the reason I want to make this next picture. I still believe I have an understanding of Peter Parker as the character that I have not quite put onto the screen yet.
I’m not talking about Tobey Maguire’s performance, which I very much love; I’m talking about my understanding of the character. I feel like sometimes a kid at the piano recital. And I know this piece really well. I know it by heart. And I sometimes get it right, and sometimes I don’t. But I want a chance to really play it the way I feel it. So I’m hoping it’s a really good screenplay, and I can express the character through that. I’ve got a really good writer [David Lindsay-Abaire].”

Until now it has been widely reported that both Spiderman 4 and Spiderman 5 would be shot simultaneously, despite the fact that Sony have never officially confirmed this. In a recent interview with Aint It Cool News Sam Raimi has debunked these reports by confirming that he hasn’t been spoken to about the fifth movie.
Excerpt from Aint It Cool’s Interview:
Are you doing SPIDER-MAN 4 and 5 back to back? Or are you just doing them one at a time or do you know yet?
Sam Raimi: No one’s talked to me about making part 5 at this moment. Right now I’m hoping to make part 4.
I just heard that everybody had signed a three picture deal, so I guess that’s all misinformation. People just assuming maybe, because you see MARVEL signing all of these people to nine picture deals and stuff now…
Sam Raimi: Did they really?
Yeah, they just signed Sam Jackson into a nine picture deal, but that’s to appear in the next HULK movie, the next IRON MAN movie, AVENGERS…
Sam Raimi: For me it’s just making the next Spider-Man picture, that’s all I know right now.
That’s cool. When do you guys start on that?
Sam Raimi: Well, it’s a never-ending process. Basically we are talking about the story right now, shortly artists will come on and I’ll start giving them shots to draw. We are supposed to start talking to a production designer soon, so it will just keep getting larger and larger.
Spiderman 4 will be released on May 6, 2011

Marvel have made some major and uber cool announcements:
Iron Man 2 will be releaesd May 7, 2010
Spiderman 4 will be released on May 6, 2011
Thor will be released Jun 17, 2011
The First Avenger: Captain America will be released July 22, 2011
The Avengers will be released May 4, 2012
Whilst there is no change to the release date for Iron Man 2, I’ve included it in the list for a reason. As part of Marvel’s announcement, the road to the release of The Avengers will be one that follows a continuous story arc.
What does all this mean? It means the biggest movie crossover in history is on its way.
From Marvel:
Paving the way for the production and release of The Avengers, Marvel announced today an adjusted release pipeline for its self-produced feature film properties that reflects the first time individual super hero characters and story arcs will be inter-woven and culminate in a multi-character motion picture.
A Marvel character-based film will now launch the summer box office season for three years in a row, from 2010 through 2012.
“This new schedule strongly sequences Marvel’s movie debut dates, big screen character introductions and momentum. It maximizes the visibility of our single character-focused films, leading to the highly anticipated release of the multi-character The Avengers film in 2012″, said David Maisel, Chairman, Marvel Studios.
A great day of news for super-hero movie and comic book fans.

I Am Legend – Francis Lawrence has been out promoting the new NBC magic-meets-a-modern-medieval-monarchy soap opera Kings and has dropped a few comments relating to I Am Legend. Lawrence directed the 2007 movie starring Will Smith and it looks like he wants to do a prequel. Apparently Will Smith wants in as well. There’s only one question on fans lips: why?
Iron Man leads the 7th Annual VES Awards – Golden Globe’s and Academy Awards mean a lot less to many sci-fi fans than do the VES awards, where some of the unsung heroes of the sci-fi genre get their well deserved recognition – those tireless but talented people who bring imagination to life through visual effects. The 7th Annual VES Awards Ceremony is scheduled for February 21, 2009. Of the nominees Iron Man is the stand-out with five category nominations including best visual effects in a visual effects-driven movie, best single visual effect of the year, outstanding animated character in a live-action movie, outstanding models and miniatures in a feature, and outstanding special effects in a movie. It’s up against some stiff competition though – if you want to see the extensive full list of nominations, head on over to The Visual Effects Society. Read the rest of this entry »
Well, today I’m going to do something a little different. Whereas on other days I keep each individual article centred on an individual subject, today I’ll keep it short and sweet. All the news that I would have written various articles for throughout the day will be in this one post. Yay, I hear you cry, for now not only do I not have to spend my day writing, you don’t have to spend your day reading! Ok, on to the news we go:
Battlestar Galactica – As the premiere of the last half of the final season approaches, the internet is buzzing with fans guessing who the final Cylon will be. Sci Fi Scoop’s pick is Lieutenant Gaeta, and it seems this is the majority view. There’s a poll go ing on over at HubDub, and at the time of writing this Gaeta leads the poll with 21%. A close second is ‘one of the pilots on the basestar in “Revelations”. Add your vote to the mix if you want here.
Terminator: Salvation – MTV have broken the news that Read the rest of this entry »
There has been a lot of speculation that Sony might move forward on a Venom movie, spinning the character off from the popularity of the Spiderman franchise. Reports now indicate that Sony has hired a couple of screenwriters to put together the screenplay. Venom was destroyed at the end of Spiderman 3, however a piece of the black alien survived and now it’s looking good for a comeback.
This news comes at the same time as the news that Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi will be returning for Spiderman 4 and Spiderman 5 – and it looks like both movies will be produced at the same time to save on costs. Admittedly Sony has not provided official confirmation of this, but inside information would seem to indicate it’s a done deal.
Insiders have also indicated that Spiderman 4 & 5 won’t go down the dark path to capitalize on the popularity of movies such as The Dark Knight, despite a certain darkness in the third movie. However, it seems fairly obvious that this won’t be the case for Venom and, quite honestly, can’t be the case. Venom is a dark, brooding alien monster. Lighten that up and you lose the essence of the character. Some people, including Todd McFarlane (the creator of the Venom character), feel that an evil villain will never hold as the main character of a movie. Read the rest of this entry »
