When I first heard that Star Trek XI was going back to the beginning, I was less than interested. But the more J.J. Abrams releases clips from his new movie the more invested in seeing it I am becoming. This featurette is no exception and to be honest, I’m now a convert to the ‘this movie looks fantastic’ side of the fence.|
If Star Trek XI is successful, is there really a possibility that Paramount might turn their attention to producing another Star Trek: The Next Generation movie? LeVar Burton, well known for his role as Geordi LaForge in Star Trek: The Next Generation, isn’t ruling it out.
In an exclusive interview with TrekMovie.com, Burton had this to say:
“Well here is what I believe to be true. If there is any chance of us doing another movie, it will only be as a result of the success of JJ’s [Star Trek XI] movie. I did not mean to infer that one would lead to another….In being an observer of corporate behavior over the years, if this one is successful, then sooner or later Paramount is going to start looking around for where else the can make some money. What is to say that JJ wouldn’t do a Next Gen movie?”
He continues: “…I believe – and I know the rest of the cast does as well – we believe we have unfinished business, and we would like one more shot to go out well. And this is the franchise that brought Kirk back to life how many times? And Spock a couple times as well. And anything is possible, isn’t it?”
I suppose based on those comments we’ll just have to wait until a little while after the 8th May to see if anything really is possible.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – Two of the villains from Michael Bay’s new movie are coming out as toys, and a couple of early pics have surfaced. I have to say, the character ‘The Fallen’ that the title of the film is based looks absolutely sick and I’d go as far as to say one of the coolest robots I’ve ever seen. (He’s the robot toy in the image to the left).
Watchmen & Star Trek XI – Watchmen hits screens on March 6, and it will do so together with a brand new as yet unreleased trailer for Star Trek XI. If you like Star Trek, you now have to go see Watchmen
Speaking of Watchmen related news, Total Film have posted an article in which Alan Moore (who wrote the original graphic novel) voices his disdain for the comic book to movie industry – actually, the movie industry itself really. I can’t help but agree with Alan Moore on everything he said, particularly his statement that, “The main reason why comics can’t work as films is largely because everybody who is ultimately in control of the film industry is an accountant.” Yet, whilst this is the main reason why comic movies haven’t worked well traditionally it is not a valid reason to support an argument that all comic book movie adaptations can’t work. Here’s the latest sci fi news. There’s isn’t a lot which I suppose makes this an easy read.
Terminator: Salvation – Christian Bale made headlines this week with a dummy spit aimed at the Director of Cinematography on the set of Terminator: Salvation. The anger episode occurred some time ago but a recorded audio of the event only found its way to the internet this week. In the audio Bale uses more ‘F’ words than is worth counting and threatens to not only bash Shane Hurlbut but also to destroy his lighting set up. Have a listen here. Enough said (and, in my view, hilarious)! In other Terminator: Salvation news, an image was also released of the T600 (left/below) which looks pretty damn cool.
Heroes - NBC’s Heroes returned this week and recorded strong ratings with Season 3 Episode 14, A Clear and Present Danger (which forms part of Volume: 4 Fugitives). Despite the strong ratings, I have to review this episode as very average. The script was poor to say the least and continuing the plot outline of ’super powered people just trying to be normal’ is now quite unbelievable. That said, after whining about how poor the series had become, the last twenty minutes of the episode really ramped up and set the scene for a potential turn around in what can only be described as a continuing deterioration since Season 2. If Tim Kring can stop making Hiro seem like an idiot and stop the ‘I just want to blend into society and be normal’ routine, and stop taking away powers from the main characters, and add some common sense to the characters, that’d be a good start. The last part of this episode sort of started this process. Let’s hope it continues. Read the rest of this entry »
Star Trek fans are about to get a new Star Trek movie but rather than rejoice you’d think it was the end of the world. Recently J.J. Abrams, the director of Star Trek XI, attended the Television Critics Association and attempted to address some of the questions and issues that have been thrown his way. SCI FI Wire has posted an article about his responses here, and in response the majority of fan rhetorical has been nothing short of whining.
Of course negative expectations towards Star Trek XI shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise considering how poor most of the previous Star Trek movies have been. Apart from Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan and a few cool Borg scenes in Star Trek: First Contact the Star Trek film franchise has rarely delivered anything worth raving about. Most of the rhetoric seems to ignore this in favor of criticism of Abrams himself, but on that note, Abrams has hardly scratched the surface of bad screen time compared to the astounding record the Star Trek franchise has amassed. On 7 May 2009 the eleventh Star Trek movie will hit the big screen, simply titled ‘Star Trek’. On one hand I’m not really that eager, partly because most Star Trek movies have been pretty average, and partly because once again movie studios are looking to ‘prequels’ for their inspiration. I thought they would have learned from the dismal reception and performance of Enterprise – going back in time is never as exciting to the fans as going forward in time. Well, possibly, because on the other hand, the director is J.J. Abrams who directed the pilot to Lost and also Mission Impossible 3. Mission Impossible 3 was easily the best of the MI’s and, well, the pilot to Lost was brilliant.
Actually, now I have to go back to the other hand. No movie is any good, no matter how great the CGI is or no matter how talented the actors are, without a good story. Read the rest of this entry »
