Sequel To ‘Superman Returns’ In Stasis

superman_unleashed

It seems Warner Bros aren’t rushing to fast track a sequel to Superman Returns. According to a report on Slashfilm, writer Mark Miller claims there won’t be a sequel any time soon, at least as far as he’s aware.

“Warner’s talked to us and a few other writer/ director teams, but things seem to be in stasis right now. As far as I understand, nothing is happening with Superman at the moment and so the director and I are just working on another project. If it happens, great. If it doesn’t, no biggie. Kick-Ass taught me that creating your own stuff can be at least as much fun and you don’t have to answer to anyone. It’s the future, baby.”

Recently it was rumored that the title of the Superman Returns sequel had changed from Superman:Man of Steel to Superman Unleashed.  This remains a rumor at this stage.

First Superman Comic Sells for $317,200

The first issue of Action Comics, which features the first appearance of Superman, has sold for $317,200 on an internet auction.

It took 89 bids for John Dolmayan, the drummer for the rock band System of a Down, to snare the rare collectible.

Action Comics #1 was published by Siegel and Shuster in June 1938.

The auction was advertised with the slogan:  “Some books seem to go in and out of fashion. Action Comics #1 will never be one of those books.”

So it would seem.

The above image is the cover of the actual comic in question – you get to see it for free.

The J.J.Abrams Superman Trilogy that never happened

Concept art of a Superman that never was

Concept art of a Superman that never was

This is really quite interesting, even though it’s a project that died years ago.

According to a report on /Film, in 2002 J.J. Abrams (Lost / Fringe / Star Trek XI) wrote the first script of what was meant to be a Superman Trilogy.  It included 30 pages of super fights, the death of Superman, five super-powered Kryptonians and mega battles that only the profits of The Dark Knight could have funded.  The script would have apparently been directed by Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand).

The project managed to get far enough to generate some concept art from illustrator Phil Saunders.  In the picture above, Superman faces off against a Kryptonian Battle Pod called a Rouser.  The scene is set in Gotham City (yep, that’s Batman’s Gotham City).  It was meant to illustrate the scale of J.J. Abrams’ epic.

/Film have posted a few more details and there’s an interesting conversation going on in the comments section.  So far it seems most people are glad it never went ahead.  Just looking at this image, I’m sorry that it didn’t.  A darker superman with more mega-battles.  Sounds awesome to me.

Of course, if it did go ahead, I’d be wanting our recent rumor of the Wachowski Brothers involvement to go along with it.   Now that would be something – a mega  Superman from J.J. Abrams produced by the Wachowski Brothers.

Sadly it’s all just talk.  Cool image though! (Click on it to see a large version).

Wachowski Brothers Superman rumor false

SlashFilm have confirmed that the Wachowski Brothers were definitely never in talks to helm a Superman trilogy as per the rumor reported by Aint It Cool News.

The rumor that the Wachowski’s were in talks to do Superman coincided with the statement that their pet project, the super hero themed movie Plastic Man, was probably not going ahead.  It also coincided with the statement that Bryan Singer had quit the next Superman project.

I’m guessing since Bryan Singer’s name is still officially attached to the Superman: Man of Steel project, then Plastic Man may still go ahead.  But there’s no news on that just yet.

Transformers 2, Watchmen, Inception, Superman and more

The Fallen

The Fallen

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – Two of the villains from Michael Bay’s new movie are coming out as toys, and a couple of early pics have surfaced.  I have to say, the character ‘The Fallen’ that the title of the film is based looks absolutely sick and I’d go as far as to say one of the coolest robots I’ve ever seen.  (He’s the robot toy in the image to the left).

Watchmen & Star Trek XIWatchmen hits screens on March 6, and it will do so together with a brand new as yet unreleased trailer for Star Trek XI.  If you like Star Trek, you now have to go see Watchmen :D

Speaking of Watchmen related news, Total Film have posted an article in which Alan Moore (who wrote the original graphic novel) voices his disdain for the comic book to movie industry – actually, the movie industry itself really.  I can’t help but agree with Alan Moore on everything he said, particularly his statement that, “The main reason why comics can’t work as films is largely because everybody who is ultimately in control of the film industry is an accountant.”  Yet, whilst this is the main reason why comic movies haven’t worked well traditionally it is not a valid reason to support an argument that all comic book movie adaptations can’t work.  Read the rest of this entry »
