Rick Marvin’s big orchestral score for the Bruce Willis sci-fi thriller Surrogates will be released on CD and as a download by Lakeshore Records next month. This is an unusual case where Walt Disney Pictures (or rather Touchstone Pictures) has licenced the soundtrack rights to an external company. Rick Marvin’s score for the film is an energetic and exciting action score influenced by Hollywood legends such as Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams. Marvin has been a film and music composer since the early 1990s, and previously worked with Mostow on his WW2 action picture U-571 and also, as an addition music composer, on Breakdown. Surrogates is set in a futuristic world where humans live in isolation and interact through surrogate robots. Lakeshore’s release of the score will be released as a download on November 10 and on CD on November 24.

Touchstone Pictures’ Surrogates and Overture Films’ Pandorum continue to perform poorly at the box office.
Surrogates has only managed to pull in $19M to date (domestically) whilst Pandorum has struggled for its $5.8M.
By comparision, Surrogates has drawn 23% of its $80M budget and Pandorum has pulled 13% of its $40M budget.

Surrogates and Pandorum perform poorly at the box office
Touchstone Pictures’ Surrogates came in second and Overture Films’ Pandorum limped in sixth at the box office over the weekend as the two sci-fi films bombed behind the family cartoon Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
Whilst Touchstone had hoped Surrogates would be the top earner, Surrogates only managed to claw back $15M of its $80M budget as Cloudy stole $24.6M of its thunder from its second week of release. Pandorum faired worse for Overture, pulling in only $4.8M, less than half of what was reasonably expected from the R-rated film.
Although typically a quieter time of the year at the box office, pundits speculate that a large part of both films’ poor performance is a result of poor reviews. Of course, those reviewers would claim that the reviews are the result of poor movies. Personally, I prefer to make up my own mind, so I’ll be heading to the theater to see both films (if for nothing else but to support the sci-fi genre). Will you?

Bruce Willis stars in 'Surrogates'
Touchstone Pictures has released three new clips from director Jonathon Mostow’s sci-fi action thriller Surrogates.
Surrogates, based on the Top Shelf Comix graphic novel by Robert Venditti, tells the story of a futuristic world where humans live in isolation and only interact in the real world using robot versions of their ideal or perfect selves known as ‘Surrogates’. It follows FBI agents Greer (Bruce Willis) and Peters (Radha Mitchell) who are forced to interact with the real world in person as they investigate a string of surrogate murders.
