Russell T Davies Plans the Future of ‘Torchwood’
Torchwood creator Russell T Davies has the future of the hit Doctor Who spin-off all planned out, he has told the new issue of Torchwood Magazine.
“I could write you scene one of series four right now”, says Davies in a revealing interview with Torchwood Magazine. “I know exactly how to pick it up. I’ve got a shape in mind, and I’ve got stories. I know where you’d find Gwen and Rhys, and their baby, and Jack, and I know how you’d go forward with a new form of Torchwood.”
‘Torchwood: Children of Earth’ Boosts BBC America
When it first screen in the UK Torchwood: Children of Earth dominated its time slot each night it was aired.
US fans had to wait a couple of weeks for their turn, but they didn’t let the producers of Torchwood down.
BBC Worldwide America Exec Garth Ancier has confirmed last week’s airing of Torchwood: Children of Earth helped to boost the network into its highest weekly ratings in history.
Not a bad effort from what was once regarded as simply a Doctor Who spinoff series.
Now we just have to sit back and wait for a season 4 announcement.

Russell T. Davies Talks ‘Torchwood: Children of Earth’
Spoiler Alert – If you haven’t seen the entire Torchwood: Children of Earth series then avert your eyes if you don’t want major spoilers.
Torchwood boss Russell T. Davies has spoken with EW about the fan backlash to certain events that transpired in Torchwood: Children of Earth.
More specifically, Davies has fielded a few questions related to the outcry from a group of fans regarding the death of Gareth David-Lloyd’s character, Ianto.
In typical Davies style he’s in-your-face unapologetic, suggesting that anyone who is upset should go watch Supernatural or take up reading poetry.
‘Torchwood’: Where to From Here?
After the brilliant Torchwood: Children of Earth many fans are wondering “where to from here?” Since the series is still airing in the US I won’t give away any spoilers in this article except to point out that if you have any doubts that there will be a fourth season, rest easy.
In an interview with io9, Torchwood and Doctor Who Executive Producer Julie Gardner has confirmed that ideas are already floating around to try and top Children of Earth.

She says the BBC will fully try to top the current season of Torchwood, assuming it actually returns in 2010. That’s “part of the fun, and part of the adrenaline rush of working in TV drama.” She adds, “The joy, for me, with Torchwood, is that it’s a show that, every single years, has reinvented itself.” That’s certainly true with the new format of a five-part miniseries airing across five consecutive nights, which Jane Trantor suggested and Russell T. Davies found an exciting challenge.
“We’re kind of having conversations now, about what the next step is, because I do think it’s fun working on a show that reinvents itself constantly. We’re looking at all of this, whether another serial arc, or possibly something else.”
As to whether series four will show the Torchwood team rebuilding after the challenging events of “Children Of Earth,” she says “You go where the story needs to take you. I think it’s always possible to rebuild.”

US Viewers Get ‘Torchwood: Children of Earth’ Exclusives
The excellent five part Torchwood: Children of Earth series will air on BBC America next week and US viewers are in for a treat.
The episodes will be aired uncut and in full after which a further 15 minute exclusive “inside look” special will follow each episode.
In preparation for airing the series BBC America have also made the first 7 minutes of the five part series available to watch online. Watch it now (available to US residents only):
Torchwood: Children of Earth airs over consecutive nights commencing Monday July 20 at 9pm to 10:15pm.
‘Torchwood: Children Of Earth’ A Smash Hit
The five episode third season of Torchwood has steam rolled the competition in both quality and ratings.
Torchwood: Children of Earth aired in the UK over five consecutive nights and on every single night it captivated audiences and dominated the ratings, easily winning its respective time slot every time it screened.
Although the official figures are yet to be published, estimated audience figures were:
Day One – 5.9 million viewers
Day Two – 5.6 million viewers
Day Three – 5.9 million viewers
Day Four – 6.2 million viewers
Day Five – 5.8 million viewers
These figures don’t take into consideration the roughly 80-100,000 additionals who tuned in to the BBC HD Channel to watch the show in HD nor those who DVR’d the show.
For once it is fair to say that the high ratings were a reflection of high quality. Here’s what io9 had to say:
Torchwood’s five-day miniseries, “Children Of Earth,” is a new classic. By any measure, the five-day “event” format was a triumph…Torchwood will probably never be as good as it’s been these past five days — although I’m desperately hoping to be proved wrong about that.
Torchwood: Children of Earth will air in the US on BBC America at 9/8c commencing July 20. Tune in, you won’t be disappointed.
