McG says Terminator's (left) look less like toys than Transformers (right)
It seems despite reports that the rivalry between McG and Michael Bay had been dealt with, it would appear to be fresh once again. In a report on Digital Spy (which I found via Filmonic) McG has voiced his opinion that Terminator Salvation is more realistic than blockbuster rival Transformers.
McG was speaking to Empire when he dismissed Michael Bay’s robot movies, claiming that they rely on “breakdancing”, “backspins” and implausible action scenes.
“I think Transformers is a terrific picture, but that’s a picture whose genesis is in a toy. They’re sort of more colourful and optimistic and the pictures are sort of breakdancing and flips and backspins,” he said.
“But ours is a very different, real world. Ours is a world of, ‘This is where we can be ten years from now’. The whole idea for doing this movie was to honour the first three movies… But begin again!”
Michael Bay started the rivalry earlier this year when he accused McG of copying Transformers ‘giant robots’ as a result of the giant robot that appears in the Terminator Salvation preview. Since then the rivalry has become one of the hottest topics amongst fans, with Transformers and Terminator fanboys going head to head all over the internet. It’s really quite funny.
Terminator Salvation and Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen will both be released mid year, but Terminator Salvation will get the jump on its toy-based rival. Salvation will be released on 21 May, whilst you’ll have to wait until 24 June to see Revenge of the Fallen.
On February 11th The Chicago Auto Show featured a giant sized model replica of Bumblebee from Transformers. Now it doesn’t matter what you think of Transformers, this is super cool.

The image came to me thanks to an interview by The Warp Zone with Paramount’s LeeAnn Stables about the upcoming Michael Bay robot-explosion flick. You can listen to the interview here and you can also check out more images of this awesome Autobot here.
MTV have aired a new Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen featurette. It includes some talk about the movie and some behind-the-scenes explosion filming. But I have to say as far as getting me excited about the movie, this featurette simply did the reverse.
Quote Shia LaBeouf who plays Sam: “Sam has just saved the world, he’s not interested in being a hero, he wants to have a normal life, he wants to go to college and experience the world, but he can’t do that because he’s in the middle of a war.”
Honestly, if that’s the theme of the main character then I feel I just got a glimpse into a movie I don’t really care for. This idea of Sam wanting a normal life is as ridiculous and as frustratingly annoying as the characters in Heroes who all have mega-super-powers just wanting to have a normal life. How many times have viewers had to endure this kind of nonsensical writing? It’s as annoying as paying your money to see Spiderman and for half the movie watching Peter Parker whine about having super powers and wanting to be normal.
Viewers want the robots, want the super-powers, want the hero, want the…ah you get the point. Whining about what the viewers want gives you, yes you guessed it, exactly what the viewers don’t want. Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen just plummeted down on my list and now I’m convinced it’s going to be as awful as the first movie. Baysplosions won’t overshadow a main character whining about not wanting to be a part of it.
Anyway, here’s the featurette:
On a lighter note, this reminded me of Robot Chicken:
Push – According to the Box Office results on the IMDB Chris Evens and Dakota Fannings new super power movie, Push, has surprised big time. The movie has grossed over $122M to date and received a sound 7.0 rating. For what was really a relatively unknown movie as far as many people were concerned, and considering that its takings have actually been going up weekend to weekend rather than down, Push is proving itself to be a winner.
Franklyn – Three new international posters have surfaced. Check em out in the movie poster section.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles – Thomas Dekker, aka John Connor, has commented on some of what to expect for the rest of the season in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It’s an interesting read to say the least, but there are some spoilers in his comments so if you want to read them be prepared. No spoilers are in these news posts so to read his comments you’ll have to visit Canmag. TSCC returns to Fox tomorrow.
Knowing – A preview clip has surfaced from Nicholas Cage’s new sci fi thriller, Knowing. It’s the subway scene and basically its a spoiler so don’t watch it if you don’t want it spoiled. If you don’t mind, then check it out here.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – Paramount Pictures have announced Michael Bay’s highly anticipated robot action flick will hit now hit theaters on June 24. It’s only two days earlier, but for many fans that’s a big deal. Read the rest of this entry »
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – Two of the villains from Michael Bay’s new movie are coming out as toys, and a couple of early pics have surfaced. I have to say, the character ‘The Fallen’ that the title of the film is based looks absolutely sick and I’d go as far as to say one of the coolest robots I’ve ever seen. (He’s the robot toy in the image to the left).
Watchmen & Star Trek XI – Watchmen hits screens on March 6, and it will do so together with a brand new as yet unreleased trailer for Star Trek XI. If you like Star Trek, you now have to go see Watchmen
Speaking of Watchmen related news, Total Film have posted an article in which Alan Moore (who wrote the original graphic novel) voices his disdain for the comic book to movie industry – actually, the movie industry itself really. I can’t help but agree with Alan Moore on everything he said, particularly his statement that, “The main reason why comics can’t work as films is largely because everybody who is ultimately in control of the film industry is an accountant.” Yet, whilst this is the main reason why comic movies haven’t worked well traditionally it is not a valid reason to support an argument that all comic book movie adaptations can’t work. Well, today I’m going to do something a little different. Whereas on other days I keep each individual article centred on an individual subject, today I’ll keep it short and sweet. All the news that I would have written various articles for throughout the day will be in this one post. Yay, I hear you cry, for now not only do I not have to spend my day writing, you don’t have to spend your day reading! Ok, on to the news we go:
Battlestar Galactica – As the premiere of the last half of the final season approaches, the internet is buzzing with fans guessing who the final Cylon will be. Sci Fi Scoop’s pick is Lieutenant Gaeta, and it seems this is the majority view. There’s a poll go ing on over at HubDub, and at the time of writing this Gaeta leads the poll with 21%. A close second is ‘one of the pilots on the basestar in “Revelations”. Add your vote to the mix if you want here.
Promising to rock the world with his upcoming release Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, director Michael Bay has announced in his forum that between now and the release date of his new Transformers movie there will be a ’steady onslaught’ of Transformers related promotion. The ‘onslaught’ began today with the release of a new teaser poster (view it in our poster gallery).
It also began with a not-so-subtle swipe at Terminator: Salvation and, thereby indirectly at director McG.
“We’ve seen certain movies coming out even try to duplicate Transformer size robots in their ads.” Bay states, continuing, “Please, come on.”
Please, come on? I wonder why the need for a back handed comment? Perhaps it relates to the fact that both movies are essentially about robots, yet it is Terminator: Salvation that will get all the fanfare by nature of its earlier release date (Terminator: Salvation kicks off on 22 May 2009, Read the rest of this entry »
