One of the ways in which Sci Fi Scoop continues to be able to bring you news day in and day out is through the support of sponsors.

Our latest sponsor is ‘Wake Up…Time To Die‘, a new online business that supplies cool retro styled T-Shirts that draw their inspiration from film.

The image above contains three examples of their designs inspired by The Last Starfighter, Blade Runner and TRON.

If you visit their website and click on one of the designs it will take you to a page that explains the origin of the design.  For example, one of my favorites is the Star League shirt.  Clicking on that design takes you here where you learn that the design is based upon the Star League who recruit new Starfighters for their war against the evil ‘Xur’ and his ‘Ko-Dan Armada’ in The Last Starfighter.

The guys also advise me that they’re going to be adding new designs constantly so keep checking back to see the new designs.

27 Years Of ‘Tron’ And At Last A Sequel Synopsis Is Revealed

Tron 2.0

Today marks the 27th anniversary of the release of Tron (released in the USA July 9, 1982) and coinciding with this comes a little news about the sequel.

Walt Disney Studio’s have announced that footage from the new film, also confusingly titled Tron, will be screened at this years San Diego Comic-Con. on Thursday July 23 at 11am. Alongside their announcement comes a synopsis of the $200M film:

Tron is a 3D high-tech adventure set in a digital world that’s unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

Finally, a few days ago CC2K posted a review of what is said to be an early draft of the Tron script.  There are some caveats in their article that indicate the script they’ve reviewed has likely since been changed (especially since a new screewriter is now on board) but the degree to which it may or may not have been changed is uncertain.  In any case if you’re interested in a little more insight into what the sequel holds (and a few spoilers) head on over and read the review here.

As yet no release date for Tron has been announced, although it is currently slated for sometime in 2011.

Will The New ‘Tron’ Be The Most Expensive Movie Of All Time?

Tron

Confirmed cast of Tron: Serinda Swan, Bruce Boxleitner, Olivia Wilde, Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges and Beau Garrett (John Hurt and Karl Urban are also rumored)

It was only recently that Time Magazine printed an error asserting that James Cameron’s Avatar cost in excess of $300M, thereby making it the most expensive movie of all time. Time quickly amended their report to say the film cost $200M, once again leaving Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End to hold the official record ($300M).

Now it seems we have a new contender.  An obscure article by the Vancouver Sun has pinned Disney’s sequel to Tron, also confusingly titled Tron, as tying with Pirates as the most expensive movie of all time.  From the Vancouver Sun:

Vancouver post-production units are salivating at the prospects presented by the Disney remake of Tron, which carries a whopping $300 million budget and opportunities aplenty for effects and digital polish.

The guys at Slashfilm point out that there is at least one glaring error in the Vancouver Sun post, namely that despite sharing the same name as its 1982 predecessor Tron is not a remake – it’s a sequel.  So it is also quite possible that they’ve got the budget wrong too.

Disney has yet to publicly confirm the budget to their much anticipated sequel, and may never do. Film studio’s are generally tight lipped about exact production figures so the likelihood that the Vancouver Sun would be privvy to this information is low.  If the figure is correct, then Tron’s budget would be roughly 20 times the budget of the first movie.

Yet even if a figure of $300M is incorrect it seems Tron is at the very least going to be very expensive if not one of the most expensive movies of all time and, given the nature of the material, is almost certain to deliver a visual effects extravaganza.

Note:  For clarification, the sequel to Tron was initially titled TR2N.  It was renamed to Tron 2.0, then Tron 2, before Disney indicated at this years ShoWest that it would be titled simply Tron.  So if you’re confused, don’t worry, we all are.

UPDATE April 14 2009:  Slashfilm report that inside sources state Tron’s budget is no where near the $300M mark, not even in Canadian dollars.  Disney won’t comment so that’s the best answer we’ll get.

Bruce Boxleitner returns for Tron sequel

If you’re a Babylon 5 fan then you’ll be pretty pleased to hear the news that Bruce Boxleitner will be appearing with Jeff Bridges in Tron 2.0.

Both Boxleitner and Bridges both starred in the original Tron, a 1982 Disney sci fi film that gives away my age, for I remember eagerly rushing to the cinema to watch it.  The storyline follows characters as they fight to survive inside a virtual computer world and battle against the Master Control Program.  Boxleitner played the character of Alan Bradley, also known as Tron.

Disney are keeping the storyline under wraps at this time which in turn is fuelling speculation about what type of role the aging lead actors will play, especially considering younger actors Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett have now been signed on.  However it goes, its very cool to see a sequel scheduled for release almost 30 years on and still starring the original actors.  Very cool.

The film is due for release in 2011.
