Sam Raimi to Direct Film Adaptation of ‘World of Warcraft’

Warcraft

World of Warcraft gamers are going to be ecstatic to learn that Sam Raimi has signed on to direct Warcraft, a feature film adaptation of the popular game.

Legendary Pictures, Blizzard Entertainment and Warner Bros. are all involved as is The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven.

According to Variety, Raimi will both supervise and direct Warcraft once he’s wrapped work on Spider-Man 4.

“At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story,” Raimi said in a statement.

Blizzard Entertainments World of Warcraft, or just WoW for short, is the world’s most popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game.  The game takes place on the planets Azeroth and Draenor and follows players as they explore these mythic worlds, battle fantasy creatures and complete quests whilst building their characters – although that’s a very simple explanation for a massively detailed game.

With the powers that are on board and the popularity of the game (Blizzard have more than 10 million subscribers), it is reasonable to expect this will be a huge film.

Warcraft is expected to be released sometime in 2011.
