Warner Bros. has released the box art (above) and details for their upcomingWatchmen: The Ultimate Cut DVD and Blu-ray release.
Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut offers a brand new cut of the film. This is the one (that I’ve been waiting for) that has the animated film Tales of the Black Freighter woven into the actual film.
If you’re a serious Watchmen fan this is a must have. You should also be aware that The Ultimate Cut will be a Limited Edition collectors item with Warner Bros. only releasing 70,000 units. Given that’s only 0.03% of the total number of DVD and Blu-ray copies of Watchmen previously sold, I’d suggest get ready to pre-order as soon as its available.
At this years San Diego Comic-Con Quint from Aint it Cool News managed to score a 30 minute interview with Terry Gilliam (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus / Twelve Monkeys).
During the interview Terry Gilliam offered up his thoughts on how he felt about Zack Snyder’s Watchmen. It’s an interesting read, mostly because at one time Gilliam was trying to turn the so-called un-filmable graphic novel into a film himself.
So you thought Watchmen’s Dr. Manhattan was blue just because it’s a cool color?
The following featurette is an extra on the Blu-ray/DVD directors cut of Watchmen and shows that there is a little more science to his color than you might think.
In the lead up to the July 21 release of the directors cut of Watchmen on Blu-ray and DVD Warner Bros. have released a deleted scene that shows the death of Hollis Mason, Nite Owl I. Watch it now:
Warner Bros. is releasing Zack Snyder’s directors cut of Watchmen at theaters one week before Comic-Con International in San Diego. Unfortunately the release will be a very limited run with screenings to be held only in Los Angeles, New York, Minneapolis and Dallas.
Zack Snyder’s directors cut includes 25 minutes of additional footage and the death of a supporting character.
The limited theatrical run will begin on July 17th and will end with a special screening on July 25 at Comic-Con.
The Comic-Con event will be a BD-Live and Blu-ray event enabling any viewer in North America to watch the movie simultaneously as the audience at Comic-Con. The viewing will include the ability to see and hear Zack Snyder comment on the movie and even allow interaction to ask questions. The director’s cut will then become available to purchase on Blu-ray and DVD from July 21 and will include the Comic-Con event as a special feature via digital download from Amazon (click the image below to check it out).
Given the limited release it is suggested if you’re close enough to a theater to be able to see the film, book your tickets in advance.
Zack Snyder has been named Director of the Year Award at ShoWest in recognition for his accomplishment in bringing the “unfilmable” Watchmen graphic novel to film.
“Watchmen actually was one of those projects where, when I read it, I was afraid of it. I loved it, I just wasn’t sure how it was going to be a movie,” the 43 year old Snyder said.
“For me, the process of making Watchmen and 300 into movies was about making something personal. It’s like getting a picture of your kids and having someone say, ‘Do you want to make this into a movie?’ You know how you feel about it instantly.”
Watchmen has so far fallen below box office expectations and has, as expected, received a wide range of opinion. Despite this, there are many who consider it an amazing work of filmmaking that few directors could equal.
“It’s a difficult movie and challenging, and some people get it and some people don’t — and that’s kind of how the graphic novel is,” he explains.
Showest is one of several motion picture industry conventions held by Nielsen Business Media’s Film Group and is considered to be one of the largest and most important gatherings of theater operators in the world.
To bring the Watchmen graphic novel to life Zack Snyder relied upon about a half-dozen visual effects houses around the world, according to a report by Variety.
One of these visual effects houses was Rising Sun Pictures in Australia, a Sydney based visual effects company who took care of Watchmen’s transition scenes from the live-action film to the animated Tales of the Black Freighter segments. These scenes have yet to be viewed as they are not included in the theatrical version of the film – you’ll have to take a look at the Ultimate DVD edition to see them.
The Ultimate DVD edition is being referred to by many names (The Ultimate Cut – The Super Cut – The Crazy Ultimate Freaky Edition). It should be available in July and will contain Zack Snyder’s full visionary movie just the way he wants it seen - and reports indicate his cut may be as long as a full 5 hours.
Contained within this full cut will be the entire Tales of the Black Freighter animated movie, transitioned by visual effects created by Rising Sun Pictures. Haven’t heard of Rising Sun Pictures before? Well you’ve certainly seen their work across numerous feature films including Superman Returns, The Ruins, Speed Racer, The Spirit, and Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Apart from the upcoming crazy-freaky super-duper directors cut of Watchmen, you’ll also see their high quality effects in Terminator Salvation, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
