Sci Fi News for the weekend 17-18 January 2009

X-Men Origins: WolverineI’ve been avoiding the news so as not to spoil Battlestar Galactica’s return, and hence the delay in posting this latest news summary.  But that’s all done now so here we go with the weekend’s sci fi news summary:

Stargate Universe – The cast list keeps growing.  It isn’t finalized yet as two cast members remain unannounced.  Those that have been announced are Justin Louis, David Blue, Brian J. Smith and Jamil Walker.  Looks like, at least to begin with, it’s an all human team.

If you want to learn about which characters these actors will play, and who are the remaining two characters yet to be cast, head on over a read ‘The Characters of Stargate Universe‘ article at Gateworld.

Terminator: Salvation – It seems not a day goes by without news on this 2009 blockbuster.  The latest news is that Kyle Reese will be in the new Terminator movie and will be played by actor Anton Yelchin. Remember Kyle Reese in 1984’s Terminator was played brilliantly by Michael Biehn – Yelchin has some mega-metal destroying shoes to fill.  Read the rest of this entry »

Sci-fi news summary for Friday 16th January

Push Gun BattleBattlestar Galactica – Want to buy a full size Colonial Viper?  Your chance is now.  Between January 16-17 the Auction Network are going mad on auctioning off real Battlestar Galactica props.  Not just any old prop either, some very cool and very iconic gear is included in this auction.  No need for me to list the items as there are far too many.  In fact, if you can name it as a prop from the show it’s probably in the auction.  These are the real deal, so if you’ve got some money to burn head on over to The Official Battlestar Galactica Props and Costumes Auction and take a look at what’s up for sale.  Oh yes, and don’t forget, the final eleven episodes begin airing today!

Terminator: Salvation – McG has let more info out about Terminator: Salvation – a lot more.  Linda Hamilton, who played Sarah Connor in the first two movies, will be back.  Not in person, but doing a voice over.  Remember Sarah Connor (John Connor’s mother) was making tape recordings for her son in the 1984 Terminator movie?  Well these will be the recordings we hear in Salvation (freshly recorded by Linda Hamilton).  If that wasn’t cool enough, McG also hints that talks are underway for Arnold Schwarzenegger to become involved – whatever it is it will probably be minor, but it’s looking like he will be involved in some capacity.  Rumors have it that there may be Terminator T800’s sporting Schwarzenegger’s face in the movie, perhaps using some form of CGI capacity. Watchmen has us on the edge of our seats…already

WatchmenIt hasn’t been released yet, but the movie industry and fans alike are on the edge of their seats as the legal battle over who owns the distribution rights comes closer to a resolution.  Well, hopefully a resolution and possibly by the end of this weekend.

In a nutshell, the script for Watchmen was sent to both Fox and Warner Brothers.  Fox called it crap and Warner saw the light.  Warner hired Zack Snyder (300 / Dawn of the Dead) and by all accounts he’s produced the greatest comic book adaptation of all time – a big call after the hit 300.  In fact, it’s such a big call that Fox have freaked out and they want a share of the money.  They know it’s huge, so they’re pulling out all the stops and claiming they own the rights.  Apparently a documentation hiccup that dates back to the early 80’s supports their case.

So does U.S. District Judge Gary Feess, who to date has lent nothing but support to Fox.  Clearly he’s not a Watchmen fan.  Or maybe he is, because he’s also considering a request to advance the January 20 hearing to January 12.  I imagine that’s at the request of Warner, because the last thing Fox want is an earlier hearing.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Minutemen – Watchmen Video Journal 10

Watchmen Video Journal 10/12 -- The Minutemen, from Zack Snyder’s upcoming blockbuster, Watchmen

Fox call Watchmen an ‘unintelligible piece of s–t’

Doctor Manhattan in WatchmenWe’re all eagerly awaiting the release of Watchmen, this years sure-to-be blockbuster hit from 300’s Zack Snyder.  But the wait is with a certain amount of trepidation as a battle for the copyright ownership wages between Warner Bros and Fox.  A battle that shouldn’t even be underway (slaps Fox’s wrist).

On January 20 a decision will be made in the courts that will possibly effect the release date of Watchmen, with Fox of course pushing for a delay in its release so they can get some of their fingers in the lucrative earnings pie that Watchmen is sure to bring.  So far the courts have been favorable to Fox, much to the annoyance of fans.  You can only imagine how disheartening these court decisions have been to the people who’ve put their blood sweat and tears into what promises to be one of the greatest superhero films of all time.

One wonders why Fox even have the opportunity to contest ownership, given that Lloyd Levin, one of the producers of Watchmen, states that upon seeing the original script, Fox called it “the most unintelligible piece of s–t they had read in years.”  Read the rest of this entry »

Zack Snyder discusses Watchmen

Watchmen featurette with commentary by director Zack Snyder.   This is going to be one awesome movie.

Fox still trying to delay Watchmen

Night OwlWith fans eagerly awaiting the release of Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, is it little wonder that none of us are gazing at 20th Century Fox with happy eyes.  If you haven’t already heard, 20th Century Fox won a federal court case ruling that it owns a copyright interest in Watchmen.  Watchmen is a Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures production and so, yes, that means problems.

What does this mean?  Well basically it brings the high possibility of, at least, delays in the movies release.  Way back in September we reported that Fox has, since day dot,  been trying to prevent Warner from releasing the film.   Fox has consistently claimed that it never let go of the story rights, an argument that dates back to the 1980’s.  They started court proceedings against Warner in February, obviously cluey to the fact that with Zack Snyder’s fame from the movie 300, Watchmen was going to be a big winner.  Now, it seems, they’ve finally gained the upper hand to cash in. Watchmen Trailer 2 (2009)

Fox hampers release of Watchmen

After Zack Snyder’s 300, it’s hard to not await the release of Watchmen with unbridled eagerness. Watchmen, an adaptation of Alan Moore’s pre V for Vendetta graphic novel of the same name, is a $100 million dollar Warner Bros picture that has suffered decades of hurdles in the process of bringing it to the big screen. Even Alan Moore himself wants nothing to do with it, but then, Moore has shown he has no affinity for seeing his graphic novels made into movies at all. If anyone could do Watchmen justice it is Zack Snyder, but Moore won’t even give him the time of day. What can you do? Make it anyway, and that’s what’s happened; early reports from those who have seen it is that its a masterpiece.

Problem is, there’s more roadblocks in the way of its release. It seems 20th Century Fox are claiming they have rights to it, and there’s a battle looming between Fox and Warner over Fox getting their cut. As it stands, the trailer is out and the film is scheduled for release in March, but it seems Fox are going to do everything they can to delay it or, even more ridiculously, stop it’s release altogether. Most people are fairly confident that the latter isn’t going to happen, but nonetheless it is something on Fox’s cards. I’m pretty sure if that happens there’ll be a lot of boycotting of 20th Century Fox to follow suit. Read the rest of this entry »
