‘Battlestar Galactica’ Leads to UN Charter Change?

Edward James Olmos in Battlestar Galactica

Edward James Olmos has passionately broken the news that the Battlestar Galactica UN panel has resulted in the United Nations amending their 1947 constitution.

Olmos made his announcement exclusively to the comedy show Attack of the Show. He stated that three weeks ago the UN changed their charter to ensure that they will never use the word ‘race’ to identify a specific culture. According to Olmos, the word ‘race’ will now only be used in context of one race – the human race.

Watch his appearance on Attack of the Show below:

I applaude his conviction but I’m not sure I’m with him on BSG having any chance at influencing peace in the Middle East…I think Joe Rogan’s plan will be the better option of the two.

Jokes aside, Olmos’ announcement has stirred some controversy.

First, Olmos says the UN have amended their 1947 constitution.  Unfortunately there is no such thing as a “1947 constitution.”  The UN Charter is actually dated 26 June 1945.

Second, the UN has failed to announce a charter change, nor has any ratification of amendments to the charter been documented – at least as far as can be determined without the UN offering up an official announcement.  It seems many news services have asked the UN to comment – but so far the UN has failed to confirm or deny Olmos’ announcement.

The UN Dispatch writes:

Amending the United Nations charter is actually an enormous under taking. It requires approval and ratification by two-thirds of the member states of the UN General Assembly and each of the five permanent members of the Security Council according to each countries’ own constitutional process. Here in the United States, ratification of an amendment to the UN Charter (or any treaty) requires the support of two thirds of the senate. I appreciate Olmos’ sentiment, but needless to say, that has not happened in the last three weeks.

“Nobody knows that the charter has been changed,” Olmos said.

It seems not even the UN.

For now, we can perhaps give Olmos the benefit of the doubt that he knows something we don’t.  But until it’s official, it’s not official.

What perhaps is more accurate is another suggesiton he made – that if more than 350,000-500,000 copies of Battlestar Galactica: The Plan sell on release day then fans will see many more Battlestar Galactica movies.  I am with him on that one so hop to it and pre-order your copy now!

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan movie will be released on DVD and Blu-ray October 27, 2009.
