Bryan Singer to Direct a ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Feature Film?

Battlestar Galactica - Cylon Concept Art (09/01/01) from the 2001 aborted series

In February we heard the rumor that Universal Picture’s were getting ready to produce a Battlestar Galactica feature film.  It was said Glen A. Larson would script and produce the new film but that the story would not be connected to Ronald. D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica series.

Now Hit Fix are reporting a rumor that Bryan Singer (X-Men / Superman Returns) might be in negotiations to direct the film.

Although a rumor at this time, it’s probably not entirely out of the question that Singer would be interested in helming it.  Singer was actually working on a a new Battlestar Galactica series almost ten years ago (prior to Ronald D. Moore’s version) that was subsequently aborted, so he’s certainly demonstrated interest in the franchise.

Of course, some things have changed since then, when Singer was quoted as saying: “The lesson I learned on X-Men is to have a healthy respect for the fan base of sci-fi fantasy franchises, and I’m confident that the Galactica brand is a sleeping giant. It was a show I watched during its initial run, from the pilot to the final episode. The essence and the brand name is quite potent in a climate where there’s a great deficit of sci-fi programming.”

Battlestar is no longer a sleeping giant and this news will almost certainly polarize the fan base, especially with the potential to have multiple independent visions of the franchise running simultaneously (there’s been talks of more DVD films based on Ronald D. Moore’s version and the spinoff series Caprica will debut January 22nd on Syfy).

It will be interesting to see if this rumor turns out to be accurate.

I won’t be watching that one. I was a huge fan of the first series. I even watched the ridiculous Galactica 1980. But after having watched Ronald Moore’s Battlestar, and then going back to rewatch the original series on DVD, the original series was more of a comedy, cheesy, etc. If it is made, I will not be watching it. The new standard is Ronald Moore’s vision. Perhaps 20 years from now if they wish to revisit the old series and that plot line, they might get a better reception. Ronald Moore’s version was clearly ultimately superior to the original product. It should be honored as such.

I always had problems with the Ronald Moore version of Battlestar Galactica. My biggest problem is that the people seemed to be as if they came from Earth and were seeking the colonies instead of the other way around with all the cigarette smoking, as well as use of phrases and words that are more in tune with our Earth history which would not be known by Capricans. I had many other issues like how they completely ignored the idea of the various colonies on different planets that was brought out in the orignal series and how the Cylons were made by us. That was too much like the Terminator. So I have high hopes for a Bryan Singer version that continues the story of the orignal Galactica with that fantastic music, great looking robots and more…..I’ll give this to Ronald Moore: He created the first real reimagining of a series that actually worked compared to The Bionic Woman, Knight Rider and other lame versions of the original. Then again, this did seem like the white trash-version of the original Galactica with great cliff hangers and surprises.
