Rumor of a ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Feature Film
A Battlestar Galactica feature film on the way?
It’s a rumor alright, but it’s one of the good ones so I’ll post about it.
According to IGN Movies Universal Pictures is planning to create a Battlestar Galactica feature film.
The rumor goes that Glen A. Larson will script and produce it but here’s the cruncher – it won’t have anything to do with the current series. Although IGN don’t say who told them this, they do say they were “informed” that the film will be based upon the original 1978-79 version.
My first thought: Please, don’t make Starbuck a male again, not after all of Dirk Benedicts whining about it! My second thought: No, not Muffet.
My third thought was to cry “Oh no, don’t go back to the old version” but then really Ron Moore’s Battlestar Galactica is a beast all of its own and one with a definite end and beginning. The underlying story of both the original Battlestar and Moore’s re-imagining is essentially the same (albeit the ending is different), and so any new movie would basically stay true to the basic premise at the very least. So after initially recoiling, I don’t think this is so bad.
What is so bad however is the chance of Universal Pictures getting the right actors for the right roles in the eyes of the fans. These are some big shoes to fill because let’s face it, the episodes of the current series are so good they may as well be classified as mini movies. If you’re going down the BSG feature film path, there will surely be a lot of disgruntled fans that just want their baby to go down that path too.
Perhaps this is just a rumor. According to IGN a Universal spokesperson refused to comment on rumored projects and actually outright denied it. IGN say they were later able to confirm the scoop but of course they can’t confirm that’s true or who confirmed it. However they also report that an official announcement will come forward in the coming weeks.
If Universal Pictures announce it as the current BSG series winds down to completion, the timing couldn’t be better. Or it couldn’t be worse. I’m not sure which one.
