Star Trek XII: The Return of Kahn?

Javier Bardem - a perfect choice to play Kahn?
Whether you’re one of the legions of fans that believe Abrams’ Star Trek is the best Star Trek movie ever or not, there’s few who would argue that prior to the latest instalment Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn firmly held the title of best Trek film ever.
With that in mind, there was an interesting development today. ComingSoon.net spoke with screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek / Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) together with producer Damon Lindelof (Lost) in which they talked about the possibility of Kahn featuring as the villain in the next Star Trek. Comingsoon dropped the seed that Oscar award winning actor Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men / Collateral / Biutiful) would be ideal for the role. It is the response they received that is interesting.
Alex Kurstman replied, “Oh my God!”
Roberto Orci added, “Did you know we’ve actually mentioned that out loud as a possibility? What a great idea!”
And Damon Lindelof said, “Come on. That’s a no-brainer. That would be the most amazing thing ever.”
Of course, Lindelof also tempered the notion by qualifying the idea with: “Who would even what to see these [new] guys then? That’s the problem. You would just watch them for scenery.”
Maybe Lindelof knows its a good idea – and a bad one at the same time. Could a reboot of an insanely good movie like Wrath of Kahn work? It’s a good question. Should they try? That’s probably the better question.
J.J. Abrams recently said, “We have not had one meeting. We have not had one discussion. There’s no outline. There’s no script. There’s nothing. We’re fishing for ideas.”
How about reboot the Borg instead, and return them to their kick-ass, virtually indestructable and scary relentless glory. Don’t make them easy to beat, don’t turn them into wanna-be individuals, and don’t make them vulnerable if you concentrate your fire at one spot. Return them to the original vision of a race that “we’re not prepared for” as glimpsed in Star Trek: The Next Generation’s ‘Q Who’. As Trek fans, if there’s anything we’ve been wanting to see done right for a long, long time it’s the Borg – and we think it’s surely a safer bet than taking on a movie like Wrath of Kahn. After all, First Contact isn’t going to be terribly hard to top.
That said, Abrams has proven himself with Star Trek, so we’ll admit we’re good to see whatever sequel he sees fit to make. Still, we want to repeat ourselves just in case that fishing trip is still underway – the Borg J.J, the Borg.
